Berlin has no evidence of CIA flights: spy chief

BERLIN - The incoming head of Germany's foreign intelligence service has said Berlin has no hard evidence of stopovers in Germany by CIA planes carrying terrorist suspects.

In an interview to appear Thursday in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit, Ernst Uhrlau said, "We have no evidence, no facts. There are only the rumours." His remarks were released in advance Wednesday.

Uhrlau is shortly to take over as head of the Munich-based BND, which collects foreign intelligence. He was previously coordinator of intelligence services at the Chancellery in Berlin.

2. Oh, I see a certain irony

The last time a Germany spy chief said "those are not hard facts", the facts were considered to be good enough to go to war anyway.

3. Why am I not surprised?

First Spain, now Germany.

It would not surprise me in the least if the CIA planes
were considered "invisible." Many security agencies
cooperated with "extraordinary rendition." They can't
out the CIA without implicating themselves.
