Time Warner CEO, who sought to gag Scalia event, has deep GOP roots

A second look: CEO of media giant who sought to gag reporters has deep political pockets

Chairman and chief executive of media juggernaut Time Warner Richard Parsons, who barred a conversation with Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia from being on the record, cut a massive $25,000 check to the Republican National Committee in 2004, and according to Newsmeat.com has given $119,750 to Republican candidates and just $12,000 to Democrats.

(snip)

Parsons tried to impose a "gag order" on a public interview of Scalia conducted by Norman Pearlstein, Time's editor in chief, Nov. 21. Various publications, including the New York Daily News, flaunted the order; the News' Lloyd Grove poked at the gag by presenting Scalia's comments as hypothetical remarks -- thereby not actually violating the off-the-record agreement.

(snip)

"Any man or woman in the press business who can write a check for $25,000 to the Republican National Committee, like Parsons did," Petrelis claims, "On top of the $4,000 he contributed to Bush--$2,000 in 2000 and again in 2004--has a political agenda."

5. You mean Jay's family? Sorry -- I don't think that family...
can be painted with a broad brush. Some of them devote their lives to good causes, some have even declined to use the name Rockefeller, some have given millions on millions to some of the same things I'd support if I had the millions.

6. Indeed. Sorry about the broad brush. Parsons is Nelson's protege.
It is quite true that any family that large and wealthy includes all kinds of people, many of whom do much good. Richard Parsons worked for many years for Nelson Rockefeller and stayed firmly in the republican fold.

7. I think you could have a point about Parsons, freestyle --
I've been able to have CNN on for some time now, unmuted, but the last day or so they seem to have warmed back up to Bushie. I'm wondering if Parsons yanked their chain.

9. Nobody should be allowed to write a single $25K check to a political group
and I don't even think people should be allowed to give 25K cumulatively to political groups.

How many Americans can afford to give that much a year to political groups and individuals when the average income in America is probably in the 25-35K range before taxes? Just the richest. We should have a government which is responsive to a lot more people than that.
