Laura Bush predicts Rice won‘t run in 2008

WASHINGTON - First Lady Laura Bush believes U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice would make a great president but predicts she will stay out of the race in 2008.

Many Republicans have been fascinated at the thought that Rice, 51, a confidant of President George W. Bush President George W. Bush, might consider a run for the presidency.

Victory would make her America‘s first woman and first black president but, while there is even speculation of a race against New York Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton , Rice said as recently as this week that she has no political ambitions.

"I‘m all for her. She says isn‘t going to run, of course, and I really don‘t think she will. But she‘d be terrific," Laura Bush told MSNBC in an interview on Wednesday.

1. "fascinated?"
more like horrified - how would they reconcile her candidacy with their "southern strategy". I realize they have an almost infinite capacity for hypocrisy, but that would be a tough act to keep up.

6. Ooh front page news: Black Woman Declines To Seek Republican Nomination
I'm also fascinated at the thought that Rice would consider running for president. Patently absurd, yet pushed as remotely plausible by the corporate media: fascinating.

7. She has absolutely ZERO appeal ... to anyone ...
... the GOP would be stupider (sic) than I think they are to run her.

10. I can see fascinating ... fascinating how she has completely
... turned her back on being a woman, an African American, and supposedly an academic.

What a bundle of self-loathing and contradiction she appears to be.

12. Why does our media care about what Laura thinks on this?
Is there not enough real news for them to chase after, such as the war in Iraq, the deficit, natural disasters, who Paris Hilton's current boyfriend is?!

Ugh.

16. DMM predicts, if Rove is not in prison, Condi will be the Rovian choice...
as Republican nominee. I'm not being argumentative -- I've just had that hunch that Rove would really like to have the first female, first black President be a right-winger of his choice. It would be a triumph for him; it would be Clarence Thomas many times over.

I've heard big-money Texans express great respect for Condi (and also Giuliani). Of course, as someone upthread notes, if Jeb wants it, all bets are off, with a BFEE candidate in the mix.

26. "teriffic"
I've always been amazed at the right's "Run Condi RUN!" campaign. Rice is a foreign plicy wonk who has never been elected to a single public office. Ever. Would any sane person really want such an inexperienced person for president?

30. So what do we know about her?
She will chose a lie over the truth to cover her own mistakes. ("No one ever foresaw terrorists using planes as missiles." Except she had been warned about exactly that scenario before 9/11.

She will lie to lead her country into war, resulting in the deaths of thousands of young men and women. ("Mushroom cloud")

She has a tendency to be delusional. ("I was talking to my husband...", referring to bush, who is not her husband, nor is she married.)

She has a problem with priorities: Broadway shows and shoe shopping shouldn't take precedence over a national disaster of epic proportions.

No, I don't see a presidential candidate here.
