Reuters: Angry Shi'ites pelt Iraq ex-PM Allawi - police
Edited on Sun Dec-04-05 08:28 AM by Cooley Hurd
CNN's Nic Robinson is reporting that Allawi was praying in a mosque when a crowd gathered and started throwing sandals at him. Shortly after, shots rang out, but it appears Allawi wasn't hit.

Link to Reuters story (although it doesn't mention shots being fired):

NAJAF, Iraq, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Iraqi police said an angry crowd forced former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi to cut short a visit to Iraq's holiest Shi'ite Muslim shrine during an election campaign trip to the city of Najaf on Sunday.

A police captain, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a large crowd of worshippers at the Imam Ali mosque hurled sandals and shoes at Allawi -- a grave insult in Iraqi culture.

On edit: I changed my orig post title to reflect the Reuters story...

Iraq ex-PM says survives assassination in mosque

NAJAF, Iraq, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Iraq's former prime minister Iyad Allawi said gunmen tried to assassinate him in Shi'ite Islam's holiest shrine on Sunday, forcing him to cut short an election campaign visit pursued by an angry mob.

"It appeared to be an assassination attempt," the secular Shi'ite said on his return to Baghdad from the holy city of Najaf.

He said 60-70 men in black, armed with guns and knives, set upon his party as he prayed at the Imam Ali mosque.

One took aim but dropped his gun, said Allawi, who is mounting a strong challenge to the ruling Shi'ite Islamist bloc in the run up to the Dec. 15 parliamentary vote.

Angry Shi'ites pelt Iraq ex-PM Allawi

Dec 4, 2005

NAJAF, Iraq (Reuters) - A crowd hurling shoes, rocks and tomatoes forced former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi to cut short a visit on Sunday to Iraq's holiest Shi'ite shrine during a campaign trip to the city of Najaf, police officers said.

A spokeswoman for Allawi, a secular Shi'ite, said she had no information on the incident but confirmed that Allawi, who is challenging the ruling Shi'ite Islamist Alliance bloc at next week's parliamentary election, had been in Najaf during the day.

A police captain, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a large crowd of worshippers at the Imam Ali mosque hurled sandals and shoes at Allawi -- a grave insult in Iraqi culture.

A second police officer said some of Allawi's bodyguards fired in the air to disperse the crowd and that also threw rocks, sticks, tomatoes and other projectiles. Police also intervened to break up the disturbance, he said.

Both policemen said they believed supporters of militant cleric Moqtada al-Sadr were responsible for the disturbances, though evidence for this was unclear.

"When Allawi entered the shrine, a few people, believed to be Sadrists picked up batons and threatened to attack him," the police captain said at the scene after the incident.

"His American and Iraqi guards fired in the air when everyone started throwing shoes and sandals at him."

7. Oh yeah, Allawi. The guy who supposedly executed 'terrorists' by
shooting them in the head himself.

Did this guy think that his collaboration with the Americans would make him a popular guy there in Iraq?

That's what I don't understand about Chalabi. He is responsible in such a large part for the tragedy that's befalled those people, how can he possibly be a part of any government?

8. Allawi authorized Falluja attack....

Allawi gives green light
Allawi said Monday he had given U.S. and Iraqi forces the green light to rid Falluja of insurgents, and he promised to restore law and order.

"We are determined to clean Falluja from terrorists," Allawi said at a news conference.

Allawi imposed a 6 p.m. (10 a.m. ET) curfew for Falluja and Ramadi, and closed Iraq's borders with Syria and Jordan to keep insurgents from escaping to other countries.

Allawi visited Iraqi troops as they waited to enter the city

11. I saw that and keep wondering what had possibly happened to cause this.
I now know. This man is seen as an ally of the Americans, he chose the wrong mosque and he is accused of executing Iraqi insurgents, many of whom were never militant, until the Americans occupied their country. Why is anyone surprised at this?

13. Right. He's not exactly liked by too many, is he?
After all, he's linked to the Americans and who has greater cause to hate the U.S. but the Sh'ia? In 1991, 300,000 of them were brutally slaughtered, thinking that the Americans would back them up when they tried to overthrow Saddam...;(

14. Well.....
when you're a powerful member of a secular party in a country that currently is controlled by a thinly veiled Iranian puppet party(the Dawa) then you can expect you're enemies to use all kinds of dirty tricks to keep you under their control......
