Dean Hammers Bush On War, Immigration
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120300821.html

Sunday, December 4, 2005; Page A05

PHOENIX, Dec. 3 -- Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean offered a preview of the 2006 elections here Saturday with a blistering critique of President Bush's policies on Iraq and immigration and the Republicans' ethics scandals. But he warned Democrats they cannot expect to win next year without offering an agenda of their own.

Speaking at the fall meeting of the Democratic National Committee, Dean pledged that Democrats would offer tax policies aimed at middle-class voters, a plan to provide health insurance to all Americans, immigration proposals that offer a path to legalization for illegal immigrants, and defense policies that would protect the nation and expose the "hollow promises" of the Bush administration.

Displaying the fiery style that excited many Democrats during his unsuccessful presidential campaign, Dean attacked "political hacks and cronies" of the president for eroding civil rights and voting rights protections, and said of Republicans: "Theirs is a party of self-absorption and selfishness."

Saying Bush had used race and gay rights to divide the electorate, Dean said, "In 2006, it's going to be immigration; that's who he's going to scapegoat next." He said Democrats must favor tougher enforcement of existing immigration laws and provide tighter border security, but said a balanced immigration policy would provide a way to give many of the 11 million illegal immigrants a path to legal status.

The Democratic meeting came at a time of growing confidence within the party that 2006 could bring significant gains in Congress and the statehouses because of Bush's low approval ratings and public anxiety about Iraq. But Dean said those conditions alone are not sufficient to produce Democratic victories. "We're doing the things that need to be done, but we have a long way to go," he said. "The collapse of confidence in the Republican leadership is not enough to elect Democratic leadership. We have to stand up for what we believe."

1. OK, any bets on how soon Biden and Lieberman
purse their lips and look down their long blue noses and say that Dean isn't speaking for the party?

If I could do one thing, I'd make every party nabob hang a big sign up where he could read it every day:

NOBODY EVER GOT ELECTED BY A CORPORATION

That's what needs to get through to these jokers, and it's something Dean understands perfectly.

3. Our stand on illegal immigration should be this:
Vigorous enforcement and punishment of those Americans who employ illegals. Of course, this means declaring war on the rich class, but I figure wealthy people who hire illegals are repukes anyway.

When the Repukes accuse us of class warfare my response is, " Yes it is class warfare. You are the assholes who declared it."

6. Dean -- unlike Edwards -- has absolutely avoided "class warfare":
it is Edwards (and Edwards alone) who is calling for restoration of the New Deal -- a prospect so terrifying to corporate America the goon squads (the Bush Administration's FBI and IRS) have already been unleashed:

...other law firms including ones in Little Rock, Ark., also have been investigated for employee donations to the Edward's campaign.

That said, your response on class warfare (the reason I responded specifically to you) is superb; been using a variant of it myself for years: "damn right it's class warfare -- ever since you people declared war on the working class."

(Too bad DU doesn't have a "similie" for a clenched-fist salute.)

10. Why do we just go after the high income earners?
If we want to go after the rich, we need to go after the rich. How about conficating investment accounts with a portfolio worth over like ten million?

Or seizing all the assets of anyobody who has a house worth more than fifteen million, or anything in an offshore account?

Maybe we should start taxing trust funds too, so any rich college brat who gets more than a million from mumsy and doddy has to pay half of it for health care for the poor?

We need to stop pussyfooting around and get some real live economic justice in this country!

7. Dean should not be shaking his finger at Democrats but get to work
Edited on Sun Dec-04-05 05:39 PM by TheDonkey
Why is he saying the Democrats must have an agenda... shouldn't HE be creating the unified agenda. What exactly is his job.

I'm tired of him complaining about what Democrats have to do when he currently has one of the most important roles in the party.

8. Dean's job is to organize the party, not set the policies.

There IS an agenda and Dean has been publicizing it.

Read up at www.democrats.org and stop dissing the chair.

9. Here's the roots of the Dem Party's resurgence...
(Dean) won near-universal praise among the DNC and state party leaders who gathered here this weekend, saying his emphasis on grass-roots organization was a welcome change from the past. Dean built his campaign for chairman by courting state party leaders, and many said this weekend that he had delivered on his promise to shift money and resources into their states. They defended the money he has spent by saying it represents an investment in party-building in places long ignored by the national party.

Keelan Sanders, executive director of the Mississippi Democratic Party said that with Dean's support, the state party staff had grown from one full-time person to four. Others cited examples of additional staff and help with technical problems. Bobby Kahn, the Georgia Democratic chairman, said the relationship between the national and state parties is the best he has seen in almost two decades.

The future of the Dem Party is at the state and local level, not the Washington Beltway clique. Way to go Dean, the man who keeps his promises!!1

12. Bottom up financing and rebuilding....gives grassroots empowerment.
Top down as has been the custom, keeps the top level in control.

"the relationship between the national and state parties is the best he has seen in almost two decades."

See, if you have that....the traditional leaders don't have as much power. They get questioned and made to answer for decisions.
