Democrat says Bush moving towards early withdrawal of US troops in Iraq
The US lawmaker who unleashed a heated debate with his call for a US troop pullout of Iraq said that he believed President George W. Bush's administration was moving towards his point of view.

"I think this administration is coming around," said Democratic Representative John Murtha, a staunchly pro-military former marine, speaking on ABC television's "This Week" program.

"I see the signals that they're starting to realize that the military has done everything it can do. The military has accomplished its mission," he said.

Murtha, who had strongly supported the decision to invade Iraq, lobbed a political bombshell last month by saying the time had come for US forces to quit Iraq.

4. I fear that Iraq is going to be a bloodbath
a colossal military blunder straight out of the military textbooks
which will make the fall of Saigon look like a Sunday School picnic.
I take no comfort in this, but I have felt from the beginning that
is what would happen. The saddest thing is that we have had people
leading this country that are not reality based. It reminds me of the court of Czar Nicholas. There is no way that they will be able
to spin this into victory rhetoric in time for the 06 elections.

3. Well...
Here is the real test to the way history will judge Dubya. And that is how Iraq will stand five to ten years down the road.

My guess is that it will be another wacky theocracy -- and not a democracy.:nopity:

After all, people vote in Iran.

7. Some definition of democracy, there
Especially since the religious authorities hold ultimate veto power over candidates who choose to run. They choose candidates they find acceptable. Then you pick from among them what you want. Either way, the religious authoritarians win.

8. Substitute corporate establishment for religious establishment
substitute Iran for USA. Are we a democracy?

11. A plutocracy, with some democratic elements.
And increasingly theocratic elements as well, at least that is the trend at an operational level (e.g. almost every politician at least feigns religiosity these days).

12. Exactly.
When I hear people sneer at Iranian theocracy as 'undemocratic' I wince - we are generally so full of ourselves that we have no clue about our real situation. Yes sure Iran is worse, but really it is a matter of degree not fundamentals.

13. I disagree.
Murtha is doing exactly the right thing - welcoming Bush aboard the Murtha bandwagon. If Bush acknowledges Murtha's gesture he is admitting that he too is a cutonion surrender monkey, just like Murtha. If he rejects the open hand Murtha has extended he is back to bashing a crusty old marine vet and having no plan other than stay and die. That didn't work two weeks ago and it aint gonna work two weeks from now either.

14. Bush must make a major withdrawal NLT next spring or risk losing congress.
Bush's problem is he wants to take full credit as HIS DECISION and play the conquering hero but now he will appear weak and forced by DEMS to make the withdrawal.

Who cares, it's just a few thousand more dead and maimed troops that have to pay the price. :sarcasm:
