Poll: DeLay faces political woes at home (CNN/Gallup)
(CNN) -- A poll released Monday evening suggests the criminal charges against Rep. Tom DeLay have taken a toll on his political support back home in his solidly Republican House district.
...
Conducted by telephone Thursday through Sunday, the poll was released hours after a judge threw out one of the charges against DeLay. (Full story)

The poll also found that 55 percent of the registered voters in Texas' 22nd District believe the charges against the former House majority leader are definitely or probably true.
....
When registered voters were asked for their opinion of DeLay, 52 percent said it was unfavorable, while 37 percent said they viewed him favorably.
...
But when 713 registered voters in the new poll were asked whether they were likely to choose DeLay or a Democrat in the 2006 midterm election, 49 percent said they would pick the Democrat; 36 percent said they would likely support DeLay, who has represented the district since 1984.

1. That seat could easily be ours if we run a strong candidate.

3. Do we have a strong candidate in Sugarland, Texas?
I mean.. there are plenty in Houston but his district is very conservative. If it looks like DeLay will go to jail or wouldn't win the thugs would likely run somebody else.

Don't get me wrong..

In the house, DeLay is the one I would most like to be defeated.

In the senate, It would be Santorum.

4. The man who ran against him last time
Edited on Mon Dec-05-05 10:55 PM by Ilsa
was a great choice, drew lots of money, but couldn't beat Bugman's political machine. I think he could beat him this time. His name was Richard Morrison.

5. Morrison won't run
IIRC, he has taken a sabbatical from politics to assist his wife who is ill.

Nick Lampson has thrown his hat in the ring instead. Again, IIRC, Lampson is a former congressman who lost his seat in DeLay's redistricting scheme.

7. I think Lampson has a good shot
Part of Delay's current district was part of Lampson's former district (the area that includes NASA) that Delay took out in his "re-redistricting" to make Lampson lose. So, in a way, Lampson is running to take back his old seat, at least a part of it.

I went to college in Lampson's former district and interned in his district office one semester; I met him a couple of times and found him to be a good guy. He's definitely a qualified candidate, and has shown he can win a U.S. Congress seat previously. The biggest uphill battle for him will be balancing the right-wing slant of Delay's district. I don't believe Lampson was a blue dog Dem, but he's basically moderate (his former district, which included Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Galveston was safely Democratic prior to re-redistricting, largely because of a substantial minority population, and not particularly liberal) and should have a shot at convincing all but the most deluded right-wingers to vote for him if he runs a strong campaign. These recent low numbers concerning Delay's re-election give me even more confidence in Lampson's chances. The district may be filled with right-wing nuts, but if all of the non-nuts and enough of the nuts who are fed up with Delay get fed up and turn out the vote I think we've got a decent shot at defeating Delay.

8. I think your assessment is right on the money l_t_d
Morrison did surprisingly well against Delay last time, cosidering that he had no name recognition. Nick Lampson has been around long enough for people to recognize his name, and for some people, that's all that's required, especially if they are looking for an alternative the the same old same old.

13. Lampson is raising money nationally
He was here in Chicago last month, and is making regular trips to talk to Dem groups around the country, since DeLay is rolling in ill-gotten cash. If you can, visit his site and toss him a few bucks. He has a very good chance of taking the seat.

The way this is shaking out, DeLay will be on trial during the campaign, which is why he tried to fast-track the trial. He failed; the next hearing is in January, and it will probably be months before he actually goes on trial.

6. You might win on one of them
Santorum is so worried about the polls in PA that he has already started running TV ads even though the election is not until Nov. So, get a 4 leaf clover, a rabbits foot, cross your fingers and anything else you do for luck. We in PA need all the help we can get.

14. Sweet!!
But this might be a moot point. DeLay's trial will be over long before the election.
