Ads Portray Alito as Protector of Christmas
By David D. Kirkpatrick
New York Times
Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005

It is the time of year when bedtime stories and television specials often recall the plucky reindeer and the little girl of Whoville who managed to save Christmas. This year, some conservative groups are hoping to add a new name to that pantheon of heroes: Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr., the Supreme Court nominee.

"Liberal groups like People for the American Way and the A.C.L.U. have opposed public Christmas and Hanukkah displays and even fought to keep Christmas carols out of school," declares a radio commercial paid for by the conservative Committee for Justice beginning Monday in Colorado, Wisconsin and West Virginia, states whose senators are considered pivotal votes on Judge Alito.

"Some courts and judges have supported this radical agenda, but not Judge Sam Alito," it continues. "Throughout his career, Judge Alito has consistently upheld the Constitution's protection of free religious expression."

Fidelis, a conservative Roman Catholic group, has begun an Internet advertisement and plans to buy radio commercials with a similar theme as early as next week. "Judge Alito ruled against the A.C.L.U.'s attempt to scrub away our religious heritage," a narrator says, recalling an opinion Judge Alito wrote upholding a Jersey City display including a Nativity scene and a menorah.

16. But the Puritans didn't celebrate Christmas.
They considered it a Popish & Pagan holiday. Why can't the New Puritans go back to ignoring the season & let the rest of us celebrate as we wish?

8. This explains Falwell's sudden war about Christmas. Political ploy
for the RR kooks to promote Alito. They are drumming up support for him among their base and those people can be counted on to yowl loudly enough to scare politicians.

15. The "War on Christmas" is an old story; Alito is the newest "holy warrior"
This 2003 essay from the Beverly LaHaye institute laments commercialization & "political correctness". At least this article considers the possibility of "true" Christians abandoning the holiday to Pagans, merchants (they're all Jews, you know) & less pure Christians (many of them already lost to Popery).

It's no mystery why merchants are seeing their bottom lines drop. Main Street Americans are getting the message — Christmas is just another day, after all. The crass advertising lures Christians to the stores; once there, their beliefs are trivialized; their Savior is ignored. Increasingly, clerks have been forbidden to acknowledge "the reason for the season" with a cheery "Merry Christmas." Instead the marketplaces ring with bland "Happy Holidays" — the mandatory, politically correct greeting.

Beverly (Mrs Tim "Left Behind") LaHaye also founded Concerned Women for America.

Robert H. Knight, director of the group's Culture and Family Institute, an in-house think tank, is among those who object to the use of nonspecific holiday greetings instead of "Merry Christmas." He says "millions of Americans are waking up to the fact that the phrase 'Happy Holidays' is less a happy greeting than a pointed assault on our civil liberties."

Salon found a far earlier example:

In 1959, the recently formed John Birch Society issued an urgent alert: Christmas was under attack. In a JBS pamphlet titled "THERE GOES CHRISTMAS?!," a writer named Hubert Kregeloh warned, "One of the techniques now being applied by the Reds to weaken the pillar of religion in our country is the drive to take Christ out of Christmas -- to denude the event of its religious meaning." The central front in this perfidious assault was American department stores, where the "Godless UN" was scheming to replace religious decorations with internationalist celebrations of universal brotherhood.

Recently, John Gibson wrote "The War on Christmas: How the Liberal Plot to Ban the Sacred Christian Holiday Is Worse Than You Thought." Even those who gave it 5 stars admit to not having read it!

14. Since "The People" Get to Vote on the Supreme Court
And since we are a Christian Nation, I (the Right Honorable Samuel A. Alito, Jr.) support flooding the airwaves with religious turpitude. I won't even rule it unconstitutional on my blog.
