A military C-130 aircraft carrying 80 passengers and 10 crew crashed into a 10-story building in a Tehran residential area on Tuesday, police and Red Crescent officials said. The plane crashed while trying to make an emergency landing at Tehran's main international Mehrabad airport. "It is awful down here. I am suffocating," Red Crescent official Shahram Alamdari told Reuters by telephone from the scene, before hanging up.

1. Remind you of 9/11?
I hope the plane truly was having mechanical problems.

2. From the BBC
The Iranian air force is believed to have about 15 ageing US-made C-130s in operation, dating back to before the 1979 Islamic revolution and the US boycott of Iran.

The country has a poor record of civil and military aircraft safety.

In 2003, an Iranian Ilyushin-76 troop carrier crashed in south-east Iran killing all 276 Revolutionary Guard soldiers and crew aboard.

Officials blame the high frequency of crashes on a lack of aviation spare parts due to American sanctions.

3. My ex-husband died in 02 in that plane crash in the
mountains of Iran in which everyone perished. Iran has an aging fleet of any kind of plane and no access to parts. Flying in Iran is like playing Russian roulette.

4. Iranian Military Plane hits building in Tehran
At least 110 dead:

http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/meast/12/06/tehran.crash/index.html

"An Iranian military transport plane has crashed near Tehran after hitting a 10-story apartment building, killing at least 110 people -- most of them aboard the plane -- Iranian officials and state-run media reported.

The air force C-130 -- carrying more than 90 people -- crashed at about 2 p.m. (1030 GMT) on Tuesday, sparking fires in the apartment building that houses military personnel and their families.

Everyone on board the plane was killed, including 47 journalists who planned to witness the Iranian navy's maneuvers in the Persian Gulf, officials said."

The story is developing.

7. Isn't interesting the choice of words used by CNN vs. the Guardian...
In the Guardian or most other world news the plane,
crashed into the building and it caught on fire and burned quite fiercely.
However on CNN's site it's headline is "plane clips the building"
insinuating that it did not crash into the building but mearly
clipped the top off.
Now why would CNN make this distinction?
Why would they want to change the story of a plane crashing
into a building catching on fire, and burning for awhile and yet
remains standing?

12. building codes? in Iran?
I am willing to bet that like most things in the ME, building inspections are subject to that great tradition of baksheesh (kickbacks/bribery). That is why the earthquakes there are so devastating- the inspectors are bribed to overlook structural weaknesses. When I lived in Iran, nothing got done without that extra "tip," as the government officials were paid so poorly. Even though that was 35 years ago, I imagine nothing has really changed. So if the building survived, I am really surprised.

15. Let's not forget the levees in New Orleans
You could probably make much the same argument about corruption in U.S. building inspections causing the hurricane in New Orleans to be so devastating.

19. used to Cal building codes, which we take seriously
I admit to being "spoiled" because I live in CA. We know what happens when buildings are not built to code: they fall down on people in earthquakes and someone winds up getting sued. It just is simpler (and cheaper) to build to code.

I am aware that corruption in building/construction inspection does happen in other states. The fault for the construction failures in the Miss. Delta lies with a multitude of factors: long term neglect from local, state and federal governments for starters.

If one looked at the damage from the Bam earthquake in so. Iran, one could see a number of flaws: unreinforced brick, traditional mud-brick construction, poorly engineered roofs, etc. Had they used and enforced building codes similar to those in CA, they would not have had the extreme loss of life. The same applies to the recent earthquake in Pakistan. So, indeed, if the building hit by the plane withstood the damage, I am amazed.

14. Yes it is interesting...
wouldn't want folks to think a plane crashing into a building won't take it down, would we?

16. You have to wonder if the plane had any help in crashing
A bomb planted on board, perhaps. I guess there will be plenty of speculation. The parallels with WTC are rather eerie.

18. It was trying to make an emergency landing
At least 128 people are dead and at least another 90 injured after an Iranian military transport plane crashed Tuesday into a 10-storey apartment building in Tehran.

Iranian state radio says all 94 people on board the plane died, including 84 passengers and 10 crew. At least 34 people on the ground were also killed.

An Iranian military transport plane crashed into this 10-storey apartment building in the suburbs of Tehran, Tuesday, Dec 6. Another 90 people have been injured, the state radio said.

The plane, which was trying to make an emergency landing, smashed a hole in the top of the building as it crashed. The building was engulfed in flames.
