Leaning on Tom (Golisano to run for NY Senate instead of Gov)
December 6, 2005 -- Some Republicans fearful the party will field a statewide slate that will go down in flames hope to persuade upstate gazillionaire Tom Golisano to abandon his quest for governor and run for the U.S. Senate instead. The move would clear the field for William Weld to take on presumative Democratic gubernatorial nominee Eliot Spitzer, and would end Jeanine Pirro's stumbling campaign to take on Sen. Hillary Clinton. With Golisano ready to face Clinton, Pirro would slide over to run for state attorney general, probably facing off against either Andrew Cuomo or Mark Green.

If I can offer an anology, when all the lines of your parachute get tangled together (Pirro vs Golisano; Golisano vs. Weld; Pataki vs. Bruno) your parachute tends to fall like a rock.

3. He is very popular in the Rochester area ...
which is where he is from, and the headquarters for his business. In fact Paychex HQ is about 3 miles down the road from me.

He is popular because he is very philanthropic, and is generally perceived to be good for the community. He also bought (and saved) the Buffalo Sabers hockey team.

Working at his company is white collar slave labor though (no surprise).

I believe his popularity is centered in Western NY. I seriously doubt he could unseat Hil.

Cheers
Drifter

4. How would Weld v. Spitzer look?
I know The Big El is well thought of. Would Weld be able to defeat him?

5. Weld's a carpetbagger.
And not too popular where he came from. As a former governor of Massachusetts, I hear people in the Bay State say good riddance.
