Baghdad's Highway of Death 'now safe'
By Oliver Poole in Baghdad
(Filed: 10/12/2005)

The US military says it has secured the road linking Baghdad airport to the city - two and a half years after American troops first entered the capital.

Attacks on the five-mile route have dropped from 142 between April and June to fewer than a dozen last month.

The road had been a glaring symbol of the US failure to control Iraq. It became known as the Highway of Death since the journey meant risking shootings, suicide car bombs and booby traps.

...

Maj Gen Rick Lynch, the American military spokesman, this week called the road "one of the most safe and secure routes in all of Iraq".

However, this being Iraq, that safety is relative. The road may no longer be a death trap but it is far from free of gunfire. My flight into the city from Jordan on Wednesday was aborted after the pilot reported that, as he started his descent, the airport was being attacked by insurgents.

1. Does a cab ride still cost 35,000.00 dollars--US?
Thats the number I heard a while back. Imagine doing 30 trips per year. Wow! I'd be a millionaire

10. Er ... not to make too fine a point of it,
but just completing the first trip takes a certain amount of luck.

GOOD LUCK! :nopity: :nopity: :nopity:

7. IIRC, that's what it cost a NYT reporter for the trip
One-way.

3. What A Joke!
Maj Gen Rick Lynch, the American military spokesman, this week called the road "one of the most safe and secure routes in all of Iraq".

So a safe road in Iraq only has 12 incidents a month. Not bad odds, eh?

6. That would be like if a bomb went off every two days on I-94 near
Milwaukee. Yeah. That's safe.

5. 142 over three months is about 1.5 per day
Edited on Sat Dec-10-05 12:37 AM by daleo
Now they are saying about 1 every 3 days. Better, but not really safe.

On edit - I note that the article doesn't say whether the road is being used as much as it used to. Closing the road to most traffic would have the effect of bringing down attacks, but the attacks per trip could still be the same. The fact that this isn't mentioned makes me leery.

9. One of the corporate whores was
reporting this story tonight on tv and showing the incredibly high level of security along the road including numerous checkpoints and heavy artillary - all costing big $$. The question is how long are we willing to continue the bloodbath in terms of human life and the economic fiasco of spending big dollars on a futile war- when sooner or later we will be driven out anyway?

11. How many other zones are now insecure due to the
elevated security here? That is the real question I believe.

...up from 150/week at the beginning of the year.

13.  "We're making progress" propaganda being pushed by corporate media so
that when we finally pull out of Iraq, Bush can declare victory.

18. Exactly !!
I expect the "almighty" Zarqawi to be killed in an "explosion" sometime before Nov. 2006. Way to go Bush! Although Zarqawi's body will not be recoverable, we will have very good intelligence and eyewitnesses who will confirm the "almighty" Zarqawi was in the building that was exploded. Back to sleep, America! LOL!

17. Let's put it to the test. How about a presidential motorcade?
Shrub is staying as far from this place as possible, yet, if it's so safe, wouldn't it make a fine backdrop for a speech? There's lots of military to stand in front of.
