Highwood police said Friday that the FBI is taking the lead in the investigation into a U.S. Bank branch where scores of customers, mostly Mexican immigrants, say their accounts were depleted or apparently never opened.
But agents are still in the initial phase of determining whether federal law has been broken, FBI spokesman Ross Rice said.
If it appears that federal law has been violated and the U.S. attorney's office agrees there is enough evidence to prosecute, the FBI will open an official investigation, Rice said.
The FBI most likely would not announce that investigation and would not confirm its existence unless charges are filed, he said. Preliminary investigations are "pretty quick," Rice said.http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/chi-0512100189dec10,1,4200867.story?coll=chi-news-hed
