Many refuse to pay 'war tax' on phone bill

For Seattle peace activist Bert Sacks, the monthly act of resistance adds up to only 59 cents. Symbolically, however, refusing to pay the "war tax" on his Qwest phone bill represents a pocketbook protest against what he sees as misuse of U.S. military power. "I object to the U.S. government policy of using famine and epidemic as tools against civilian populations. That's wrong," says the retired engineer, who has fought for a decade to get economic sanctions against Iraq lifted.

Sacks is one of thousands of Americans believed to be refusing to pay the federal taxes attached to their monthly phone bills -- money that helps fund military operations overseas.

Many are taking the step as a protest against the war in Iraq. And in many cases, the phone companies are helping them do it.

"We oppose the policies of 'pre-emptive war' and an 'endless' war on terrorism, which led to the Iraq war, which violate human rights and international law, and which have cost us hundreds of billions of dollars while our states and cities face unprecedented deficits, and cutbacks of vital services and programs," reads the statement on a Web site called hanguponwar.org.

Bill Would Repeal 107-Year Old Tax on Talking
From Robert Longley,

Telephone tax helped fund Spanish-American War
Dateline: May 2005
U.S. Rep. Gary Miller (R-California) has introduced a bill to repeal a "temporary" tax on talking enacted 107 years ago.

Miller's bill would repeal the 3% federal excise tax on telecommunications established in 1898 as a means of generating revenue to fund U.S. combat efforts in the Spanish-American War.

While the Spanish-American War tax was originally billed as a temporary luxury tax 1898, when only the wealthiest Americans had phones, the telephone is now an essential part of American life. The tax, says Rep. Miller, is therefore highly regressive, as it represents a greater share of the income of poorer Americans.

8. Avoiding all together here: We use Sunrocket.
(VOIP phone)

No taxes at all - and apparently it gives sneak and peek wiretappers fits because of the nature of the device. (Not that I believe I'm being tapped, but if we were to be because we're peace and justice activists, it makes it harder on Agents Mike, Bob and Bill.

12. That's my line of work.
I live to screw the phone companies. Unless, of course, they board the cluewagon and start offering VoIP service at reasonable prices. THOSE phone companies are cool.

If you ever want to have a Brazilian phone number in any major city, let me know. :hi:

9. Thanks for pointing this out!
Yes, we should be getting every liberal in the United States to start with holding this portion of their bill. Screw the fucking sneaky government! Lets find ways to stop them from waging their immoral aggression!

10. I don't want to underwrite torture or empire.
Slash the military budget. There will be two immediate effects: more capital circulating in the economy, and a safer world.
