Iraq, U.S. Release 238 Detainees Ahead of December 15 Elections

(Bloomberg) -- The U.S. led coalition forces in Iraq and the Iraqi government released 238 detainees today ahead of the Dec. 15 parliamentary elections, according to the U.S. embassy in the capital Baghdad.

The detainees' release, which follows the freeing of more than 200 detainees on Dec. 4, comes as an insurgent group has threatened to kill four kidnapped Christian peace activists unless all prisoners in the country are freed.

The detainees were released from the Abu Ghraib and Camp Bucca prison facilities.

Coalition forces "will continue to release more and more detainees," the embassy said in a press release e-mailed to reporters. "With the standards and processes in place, we also hope with the releases there is an increasing level of stability and security in Iraq."

1. Hey, idiot!
"We also hope with the releases there is an increasing level of stability and security in Iraq."

Imagine the 'stability and security' that might have existed in Iraq if we hadn't falsely accused people, jailed them and tortured them in the first place!

2. I hope the peace activists will be released
I'm also glad that Iraqi detainees are being released. However, when the Bush administration hints at "harsh interrogation techniques" aka torture being absolutely essential because the prisoners being held at Abu Ghraib and Camp Bucca are the worst of the worst, it makes me wonder how many completely innocent people have been tortured. Even if they aren't innocent of crimes, torture is flat-out wrong, and barbaric.

We need to get out of Iraq, and devote our resources to rebuilding the Gulf Coast, our crumbling infrastructure, our schools, and fund programs which will help people here in this country. The poor are being abandoned, the middle class is being made poor, and the haves and have mores just keep getting richer.

3. Once again: If you had any doubt that we're holding hostages
These "goodwill releases" should dispel it.
