'Daily Show' halts production following suicide (25 yr old staffer)

An employee of the Comedy Central program "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" has committed suicide, leading the network to suspend production of Monday night's episode of the program, a spokesman confirmed.

Bill Clarey, 25, took his own life over the weekend, according to the network. A former "Daily Show" intern, Clarey also worked as a receptionist at the program's offices in New York.

"Bill Clarey, a young staff member of 'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,' passed away over the weekend. He was a wonderful and dedicated employee and all of us at Comedy Central and 'The Daily Show' are devastated by his loss. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends," the network said in a statement.

Comedy Central has sent grief counselors to the "Daily Show" set to help its employees, sources said, who first learned of the suicide upon coming to work Monday. The network was scheduled to shoot a week's worth of new episodes before shutting down for the final two weeks of the year. The network will air a "Daily Show" repeat instead of the regularly scheduled episode.

How sad!

6. Depression is a terrible thing, and no respecter of age.
Twenty-five. Hell. Damn. My daughter is 29. Wrap your arms around your friends this Christmas season, and ask them how they are doing. And mean it.

We can only hope that he finds the peace, comfort and happiness in the other life, that he couldn't find in this life.

37. Yeah. I'm 26 and have lived through suicidal depression.
Whenever I read about someone who didn't get the help he or she needed in time, it breaks my heart.

9. A sad thing indeed and a justifiable reason not to air but I have to say
Jon Stewart takes more time off than Bush* if that is at all possible.

10. I'm sure he gets paid better as well.
However, Stewart actually is productive unlike Bush.

Which is still productive. Its important not to confuse the two.

I hope George W. Bush takes a vacation for the next three years, so that's not the point. But, are you sure you are in the right place, here on DU? If you want to Bring It, I am here to listen to what you really think. Just spell correctly.

I think he was just telling us all a joke, everybody knows that Bush has had more vacation time than Cheney has had evil thoughts.

At least, I think he is joking.

He must have "missed" a few of the important "briefings"..He probably thought.."Briefs?? I prefer boxers" and went out to root out some armadillos before laura called him in for breakfast:)

28. What? Junior had to root some armadillos out of his boxers? Eh?
Jaysus...he's weirder than I thought...I mean I've heard of putting squirrels down boxers...but I've never heard of putting armadillos down boxers.

See, I blame Junior's upbringing, this sexual weirdness was obviously formulated when he was Damian, I mean when he was a child.

27. Yes, my vacations after I've done some scuba diving or something I've
Often just kinda wandered about, and on those wanderings, I've VERY often done pretty regular stuff like...shake hands with girl scouts who INDEED were getting an award, then I've sign autographd...which is DIFFERENT than signing autographs, which as we know signing autographs is ONLY a custom that happens on All Saints Day...whereas sign autographd as we know is a custom that happens during the Summer through to the Fall, but NOT during a Leap Year...then I've also on MANY occasions during my wanderings hold up babies...I've just gone right up to those babies and I've held them up...I've said:

"Okay Buster...stick 'em up...stick 'em up and HAND OVER THAT LOLLIPOP!!"

Yes, all this stuff is just TIME OF DAY during EVERY vacation I've had...EVEN during a vacation one particular time that occured in The Amazon, I met girl scouts and had many babies to hold up.

So ah did ;)

32. The level of humor and great writing
most likely saps a great deal of creative juice from the staff. But also perhaps it is how much Comedy Central will pay for.

What's the point of comparing vacation time of the president of a nation with the vacation time of a comedian?

29. condolences to Mr. Clarey's family and friends ...
Unfortunately, this time of the year can be particularly stressful for people who are vulnerable. But it's good that his colleagues have come forward to talk about this, and are receiving counselling. The sooner this can be destigmatized, the better.

36. If they only knew how important they are to us.
I wonder if Bill knew that. Sometimes we feel worthless. I'm so sorry about this loss.
The Daily Show is everything to me. It's huge. If we all knew that we are all important. If we all knew that we play a role in some piece of this world's show. I'm so sorry he's gone.

I happen to think this time of year sucks. It's a lot of hype. Please remember you're important.

40. Dear Bill, my thoughts are with you, your friends and family
I hope you find the peace you deserve. O8)

Life can sometimes become overwhelming, and sometimes we don't know what to do to alleviate the pain.

You will be missed by the people who knew you, as well as the total strangers like myself.

Last year someone I knew committed suicide, it still makes me wonder why. He had 2 young children that will grow up never really knowing their father.

If anyone is feeling the pressures of the daily grind to much to bear, please please try to talk with someone you can trust.
