Pope says war no excuse for human rights abuses

Pope says war no excuse for human rights abuses

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict said in an annual peace message on Tuesday that countries have a duty to respect international humanitarian law even if they are at war.

In the first peace message of his pontificate, he also appealed for worldwide nuclear disarmament and said countries considering acquiring such weapons should "change their course".

...

In one part of the message, which is sent to heads of state and international organisations, the Pope said war could not be an excuse for disregarding international humanitarian law.

"The truth of peace must also let its beneficial light shine even amid the tragedy of war," he said, re-enforcing his stand by quoting from another Vatican document that said "not everything automatically becomes permissible between hostile parties once war has regrettably commenced".

3. Wasn't this Pope with the group that pushed the re-election of Bush
over a candidate who has a record going back to at least 1971 of being for international law and against atrocities. I hope he's proud of himself.

4. From what I understand, this Pope is very antiwar...
I spoke with the priest in my parish who has had some contact with him and has extensively read his writings.

As you know, Benedict XVI was the Cardinal of Munich and Freising at one time, so the local religious community in Austria and Bavaria are quite familiar with his views.

Now this is the type of messages the Vatican should be sending out!

11. Now If...
the Catholic Church had spent as much time dealing with the human rights abuses of Catholic dictators as they have on homosexual priests, then the world might have been a better place and the Pope would have some moral authority to speak on this issue.
