Poll: Most say Bush has no Iraq victory plan

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Despite a series of recent speeches spelling out the administration's policies on Iraq, the majority of Americans in a new CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll said they do not believe President Bush has a plan that will achieve victory in Iraq.

Fifty-eight percent of those polled said Bush doesn't have a clear plan on Iraq, compared to 38 percent who said they believe Bush does have a plan for victory.

At the same time, the poll found that 63 percent of the respondents believe Iraqis have made real progress toward establishing a democratic state over the past two years. Thirty-four percent said they don't believe Iraq has made real democratic strides.

...

Nearly three out of five Americans, 59 percent, said they disapproved of the way Bush is handling Iraq; 39 percent said they approve.

1. "Iraqis have made real progress toward....
establishing a democratic state over the past two years."

That is a sad statistic that shows how shallow most people's knowledge of the situation truly runs. :-(

2. "too rosy" a scenario.....

<snip>

Thomas E. Cronin, a political scientist and presidential historian at Colorado College, said Bush's Iraq speeches will help him "a little bit, but not much."

On the other hand, said Cronin, "if he doesn't do those things, he loses any capacity to be an agenda-setter."

Michael O'Hanlon, a Brookings Institution military analyst who has supported Bush's decision to invade Iraq, said he doesn't think the president had "enough new to say to justify four speeches."

"Yes, he's showing his focus and his resolve, and that's all good. But he's also not introducing many new policy ideas," O'Hanlon said. "And his interpretation of how things are going in Iraq is, as far as I can tell, simply too rosy."

4. Operation Enduring Bullshit ... falls flat on its face
Georgie's attempt to sell this lousy war to the public is starting to look an awful lot like his last failed initiative, the campaign to destroy Social Security.
