GOP senators upbeat after White House Iraq briefing

WHITE HOUSE After a briefing at the White House, G-O-P senators are sounding upbeat about this week's Iraqi elections.

President Bush invited a half-dozen Republicans to hear from Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, U-S Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad (ZAHL'-may kah-LEEL'-zahd) and General George Casey, the top U-S commander, who spoke by video hookup from Iraq.

Afterward, Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum told reporters the election preparations are going well -- though he cautioned it'll be weeks before the outcome is clear.

"Four U.S. soldiers killed on patrol today" - yeah, that makes me really upbeat :sarcasm:

There's apparently no disaster that can't be fixed by a PR stunt.

8. Juan Cole is reporting that the US has banned all driving in Iraq
In an attempt to limit the possibility of car bombers disrupting the elections. Fortunately it is impossible to imagine any problems this policy might introduce with regard to people showing up to vote.

Also, the candidates haven't been able to campaign for fear of being killed. So of the some 7000 candidates, maybe a dozen have ever been seen in public, and those only on TV.

Democracy is swell!

9. 7,000 candidates?
So the US is banning all driving. A while ago, Baghdad was under curfew. A couple of years ago, an entire town was encircled with barbed wire. Everyone was checked coming in and going out.

Actually, the thing with check points has always gone on.

Can you imagine the rage these people must be feeling? And the colossal waste of our time, to check peoples' ID cards, pat their shirts, lift up blankets in baby strollers, frisk women etc etc, break into homes, wander down alleyways, only to get blown to bits.

Just unbelievable. What the hell are we doing there?

11. 7000 candidates sounds like a lot
But given the number of seats up for grabs, and the fact that the new Iraqi government is a multi-party system, it's not that unusual.
