Soldier's dad confronts protesters, with love

BY RICK RUGGLES

WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Larry Cahill figured he could take one of two paths as he grieved over the death of his son, Army Capt. Joel Cahill.

Capt. Joel Cahill, 33, was a graduate of Papillion-La Vista High School and the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and a 15-year military veteran.

The Papillion father could choose hate and rage, he said, or he could choose love. Cahill said it did not take long for him to decide which way he would go.

So a couple of days before his son's memorial service Saturday, Cahill knew how he would respond to followers of Fred Phelps, the Kansas-based pastor who protests at soldiers' funerals. Phelps contends that God is killing American soldiers because America accepts homosexuals.

3. He's been doing this for a while
One time the local biker group kept between him and the funeral, keeping their cycles on so that the mourners wouldn't hear their chants.

11. Phelps was planning on protesting a soldier's funeral in Bakersfield, CA
But local opposition was so strong against him, he cancelled his appearance.

Despite not being there, more than 1,000 people showed up to protest him.

8. They want you to get mad
so they can sue your ass off. They are all lawyers, the lot. They've made a lot of money from suing the government for denying them their 1st amendment rights.

10. You're absolutely correct, but one of these days...
Fred Phelps is going to encounter Bubba, a cousin of one of our fallen soldiers that doesn't have deep pockets. His clan will then try and play the martyr card, but that doesn't pay ther bills. You know what I mean, Vern?
