Predicted Iraqi Election Outcome
So this is how the Iraqi election on Thursday might turn out. Two opinion polls this week suggest when the votes are counted, the results will look something like:

Shiite Islamic Coalition: 30 to 35 percent

Ayad Allawi (secular nationalist slate): 20 percent

Kurdish parties: 16 percent

Sunni Parties: 16 percent

The game to watch: How will the government be formed? The slates will have to create a two-thirds majority to forge a government...but how will they do it? Watch Allawi try to split the Shiite coalition and break away some of the moderates.

3. Our troops died to make Iraq...
Iran Jr.

That's what they died for. Now, if the people of Iraq really truly want that, then we have to accept that decison, but I'll be damned if one drop of American blood should be shed for that outcome.

I would have heartily supported the Iraqis if they elected to overthrow Saddam, even through a bloddy coup, but as he is not a threat to the US, it's their problem, not ours.

4. two-thirds majority rule still in effect?
I did not know that. Sure it forces compromise and pragmatism but, damn, by the time the horse trading is done, the Iraqis won't be swearing in their new government until April.

I figure a government of:
Allawi's Iraqi National List + Kurdistan Alliance + Sunni parties + Chalabi's National Congress.

Perhaps the SCIRI won't join the government but it may vote to install it. Even if SCIRI does put a coalition together, I doubt Jaafari will remain as PM - he's been less than effective.
