Cuba pays tribute to John Lennon at a weekend ceremony in Havana

Hundreds of fans gathered for a concert at John Lennon Park in Havana yesterday in remembrance of the slain musician.

President Fidel Castro unveiled a statue of Lennon sitting on a park bench in Havana five years ago. The park was renamed in honor of the ex-Beatle.

Sundays concert was organized by the Cuban Institute of Music and included many locally well-known musicians playing Lennon and Beatle tunes for the enthusiastic crowd.

Concert director, Guillermo Vilar, said John Lennon has always held a special place in the hearts of Cubans because he believed in peace.

Some even went so far as to organize burning of Beatles records and photographs, and there were scenes of boys and girls jumping on Beatles records, holding burning Beatles photographs and grinning and holding banners that said "Jesus died for you John Lennon" and "John Lennon is Satan"!!!(We hear to this day that the Beatles were "antichrists", but it seems like God was more like on the Beatles side, because one of the radio stations that organized the record burnings was hit by lightning the very next morning, which caused great damage to the stations equipment and reportedly knocked their news director unconscious!) A member of the Ku Klux Klan said that the Beatles had probably "been brainwashed by communists". With the Beatles American Tour only days away, Beatles manager Brian Epstein told the American Press that John's statement had been completely misinterpreted. But the people who were burning the records did not, or would not, listen and understand.

That's great. Hope they liked the statue. It looks wonderful in photos.

Castro fan. That's so clever. As if all those people who fought to bring in the revolution, and to maintain their goals in the face of economic warfare and 45 years of continual terrorism by air and sea from idiots in South Florida, and non-stop threats every time there's a right-wing nutjob pResident in the States never existed. It's just one great big tall scary man holding 11,000,000 people hostage long into his old age, isn't it....

when they had the statue put in place with speeches and great ceremony. Almost every tourist photo collection you see from someone who's been to Havana has a picture of the statue, including many Americans seen sitting beside him.






With any luck, maybe Americans will finally get an administration which will allow the travel ban to be removed so we can go there and have our photos taken, too!
