Prime Minister Paul Martin escalated a war of words with the United States on Wednesday, telling Washington not to dictate to him what topics he can raise in the run-up to Canada's January 23 election.

U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins warned Martin and other Canadian politicians on Tuesday not to bash the United States as part of their campaigning.

But Martin -- who has regularly attacked the U.S. stance on a bilateral trade dispute over softwood lumber and also criticized Washington's approach to climate change -- said he was not paying attention.

"When it comes to defending Canadian values, when it comes to standing up for Canadian interests, I'm going to call it like I see it," he told reporters in a lumber yard in Richmond, British Columbia.

"I am not going to be dictated to as to the subjects I should raise."

Although Martin came to power in December 2003 promising to repair relations with the United States that were damaged by his predecessor's decision not to take part in the Iraq War, he has shown little hesitation in attacking Washington.

The two sides are locked in a protracted dispute over the U.S. decision to slap tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber shipments on the grounds they are unfairly subsidized. Canada says its lumber producers are not subsidized.

4. Go get 'em Paul!
'Bout time someone stands up to these bullies in the American Government!

And on the other side of the coin:

"I actually think the (U.S.) ambassador's intervention was inappropriate... I don't think foreign ambassadors should be expressing their views, or intervening in an election,"

Ooooh Stephen (Harper), I bet Ambassador Wilkins is shaking in his boots after that stinging rebuke.

5. He'd sound more impressive if he...
... ended NAFTA, nationalized the oil industry, developed trade relations with Europe and the Pacific Rim.

"When it comes to defending Canadian values, when it comes to standing up for Canadian interests, I'm going to call it like I see it,"

So why are we paying over $0.80/L, Paul?

Why were we paying over $1.25/L when Katrina smashed the Gulf?

How much money do we have to drain from the local economy to pay for your pals in the oil industry?

damned closet tory.

We need the NDP!

11. Hear! Hear!
Fellow countryman--glad to see someone isn't drinking the Liberal Party's kool-aid--defenders of Canada, yeah right, "30 million reasons to vote liberal".

But the part I don't get, is what happened to their token Canuck David Frum. He would have told the Bushites straight up; whatever you do, don't attack the guy publicly.

Even though the Bushites are from the oil patch, these guys would fuck up a one pump gas station.

12. Bush can't believe he'd be unpopular anywhere...
... so he probably ignored the advice.

Hail and well met, mon ami!

I can just see Harper saying "Ooooh Noooo!!" and sink his head onto his desk.

I just -love- it when the RWers screw themselves royally

It'll be a strange (and welcome) day when the NDP out-poll the Liberals, but man do we have to put as many NDP in parliament as we can. Under Martin the Libs are -just- left of the Tories, and we need to seriously drag them back to left of centre.

I'll give Martin his debt-reduction. He did good there. But if I'd been voting in that leadership election I'd have given Sheila my vote, no doubt.

Martin is about as far away from Trudeau as you can get and still call yourself a Liberal. Only the NDP can reign him in.

6. Can we suspend the administration before it does more damage?
Really. We are already very sorry for not having stopped these people before they got to power. Now they're crazily destroying the world. Is there not a way to suspend this administration now?

And their politics are irrelevant to me. When it comes to their own political processes, they can damn well say what they want, and so can we. We both should mind our own business when it comes to internal issues such as these.

14. whatever
Just because the average american doesn't know about Canada's politics, doesn't mean we should shut the f*ck up.

the NAFTA stuff is both our business, and if * wants to screw with the rules, then Canada should have a voice, not be told to watch out.

We have freedom of speech here too you know.

The Bush admin thinks they can stifle dissent, but I doubt they can in Canada.

wtf is with the * admin getting so babyish about a little dialogue? c'mon

By Allan Dowd
RICHMOND, British Columbia (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin escalated a war of words with the United States on Wednesday, telling Washington not to dictate to him what topics he can raise in the run-up to Canada's January 23 election.

But U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins, who warned Canadian politicians on Tuesday not to bash the United States as part of their campaigning, denied on Wednesday he was trying to control the election debate.

Martin -- who has regularly attacked the U.S. stance on a bilateral trade dispute over softwood lumber and also criticized Washington's approach to climate change -- took aim at Wilkins's warning for a second consecutive day.

"When it comes to defending Canadian values, when it comes to standing up for Canadian interests, I'm going to call it like I see it," he told reporters in a lumber yard in Richmond, British Columbia. "I am not going to be dictated to as to the subjects I should raise."

Anyone have a count on how many 'warnings' these fools have issued since 2000?

It must be in the thousands!

22. Memo to Rumsfeld:
Donnie,

I've been a-wonderin. Is it a possibility that that darn sneaky
Saddam shipped them thar WMD's to Canada? I'm thinkin we should
give them Canucks 3 days to give 'em up...or else.

Ponder on that, and get back with me...after some Irakee terrorist
prisoner scum confesses (voluntarily) that Martin is in on it.
