House GOP Bill Rejects Iraq Withdrawal

Friday December 16, 2005 1:16 AM

By LIZ SIDOTI

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - House Republican leaders drafted legislation on Thursday that rejects calls
for withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq as "fundamentally inconsistent with achieving victory"
and said they would force a vote on Friday.

It would be the second time in five weeks that GOP leaders maneuvered for a vote on the war
in the face of Democratic calls for a timetable for withdrawal.

The resolution expresses the commitment of the House "to achieving victory in Iraq."

It honors the sacrifices of U.S. forces and praises Iraqis for voting in parliamentary elections
Thursday. The election is "a crucial victory for the Iraqi people and Iraq's new democracy,
and a defeat for the terrorists who seek to destroy that democracy," the resolution says.

WASHINGTON - House Republican leaders drafted legislation on Thursday that rejects calls for withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq as "fundamentally inconsistent with achieving victory" and said they would force a vote on Friday.

It would be the second time in five weeks that GOP leaders maneuvered for a vote on the war in the face of Democratic calls for a timetable for withdrawal. Some Democrats accused Republicans of playing politics with the war while a group of their colleagues sent President Bush a letter describing what they believe should be the U.S. position in Iraq.

The GOP resolution expresses the commitment of the House "to achieving victory in Iraq." It honors the sacrifices of U.S. forces and praises Iraqis for voting in parliamentary elections Thursday. The election is "a crucial victory for the Iraqi people and Iraq's new democracy, and a defeat for the terrorists who seek to destroy that democracy," the resolution says.

U.S. forces, the measure said, would be required in Iraq "only until Iraqi forces can stand up so our forces can stand down, and no longer than is required for that purpose." The resolution seeks to put the House again on record as rejecting an immediate troop pull out.

4. Jesus, what bullshit.
The GOP dipshits want to commit us to staying in Iraq until their "army" is ready to fight the insurgency. What if it takes 20 years?

Why did they refuse the Democrats' amendments to get bipartisan support for a resolution? To embarras the Dems, obviously. The Repugs are pure pig shit.

"Because we in Congress are charged with overseeing the safety of our sons and daughters when the President sends them into battle, it is our responsibility, our obligation to speak out for them. This obligation has not been met. That's why I am speaking out now.

"I am asking you to join me in demanding a real discussion of the war in Iraq from the U.S. House of Representatives." -- Congressman John Murtha (PA-12)

9. Didn't they check with Pat Robertson first?
Pat says the war is over and we won and Democrats are traitors for wishing it over sooner... I don't think the most far out fiction writer could come up with this stuff...

10. and there will be plenty of dems
that fall for their false tactics and their ability to create democratic splits and contradictions they can use. All because some rather line up with "strong on defense" talking points so much so as to keep current policy going rather than assess the situation intellectually.
