GUATEMALA CITY -- The United States has deported the son of Guatemala's former tax chief to face charges of embezzling millions of public dollars, the U.S. Embassy said Thursday.

Junior Vinicio Abadio Carrillo, 32, was deported to Guatemala on Wednesday, the embassy said in a statement. He was picked up two months ago in Glendale, Calif., after entering the U.S. illegally, the statement said.

Abadio Carrillo fled Guatemala last year after his father, Marco Tulio Abadio Molina, the country's former tax chief, was imprisoned for embezzling more than $5 million, the embassy said.

Guatemalan officials said they planned to transfer Abadio Carrillo to the Pavoncito prison, where he will join his father in a cellblock reserved for corrupt officials.

Guatemalan officials are seeking the extradition from Mexico of Portillo, whose term ended in January 2004. He is accused of helping the military embezzle more than $15 million.
