Radiation alert at Chechen plant

Prosecutors in Chechnya have opened a criminal investigation after finding "catastrophic" levels of radioactivity at a chemical factory.

Investigators say the radiation - in one place reportedly 58,000 times the usual level - poses a danger to people in the region's capital, Grozny.

The case has also raised fears militants could take radioactive waste to use in a so-called "dirty bomb".

The plant has reportedly not been secured since Russia bombed it in 1999.

2. i'm not surprised, when
they said late last night that the 'radiation levels were normal'- twice in a short news blurb- what they failed to say was that there was NO contamination- The ratidation levels are probably still 'normal' somewhere in the smelter- but the contaminated areas may be registering very high levels of 'normal radiation'-

This world has become a word game-

3. This is in a different city than the explosion
This radiation leak was caused by improperly stored nuclear waste, while there was an explosion at a smelter at the other one.

4. oh geez,
wierd that it suddenly becomes news on the heels of the 'smelter' accident???

Thanks for the clarification. Not very re-assuring, but something that should be exposed.-
What in the world are we doing to this planet???
