Senate passes $8 billion in Gulf Coast tax breaks
Congress passed nearly $8 billion in tax breaks for Gulf Coast businesses on Friday but denied federal help for casinos, liquor stores and golf courses.

Almost four months after Hurricane Katrina slammed into the coast, destroying businesses and jobs, lawmakers responded to President Bush's appeal for revitalizing the region with a special enterprise zone.

.......

Sen. Trent Lott, a Mississippi Republican who pushed for casinos to share in the tax breaks like any other legal business, said he grudgingly swallowed the exception.

"It's totally bad policy. It's totally ridiculous. It's totally hypocritical," he said. "But this is almost $8 billion. We had to get it done."

1. And why not the casinos, liquor stores and golf courses.
I assume they all paid their taxes just like any other god fearing business. Oh, never mind....

2. If you going to give money away
Why not use it to reconstruct N.O
8 Billions will go a long way to help the poor citizens of N.O get back on their feet.
8 Billions in tax breaks to businesses making profit already earned just make shareholders richer.

Help those who need help not those who are perfectly capable of getting back on their feet themselves.

It is not possible for N.O to reconstruct. They don't have the income. Just not enough citizens with income to tax. And now a rule to give away a potential 8 billions that is so badly need for reconstruction.

How much of those 8 billions will be enjoyed by N.O businesses and how much of it will be creative accounting enjoyed by businesses out of N.O.

Will it be like the 8 billions that disappear in Iraq. With no explanations.

What kind of future you are reconstructing for the children of tomorrow?

4. True, this is a very inefficient way to help New Orleans
They need basic infrastructure rebuilt. Trying to revitalize New Orleans through tax breaks is pure voodoo economics at this stage.

7. It is worst than voodoo economics
It is clear abused of power of robbing the US for the benefits of the rich corporations and total disregard of their citizens.

5. There's a lot more to the story than New Orleans.
Coastal Mississippi, for example.

All of the Katrina victims have been forgotten, and this country has the money to help them all, if only our congressional whores would do it.

8. This country is SICK
Half a trillion spends for an illegal war
And not enough to help its own citizens
CHARITY begins at HOME.

SO SO SICK. 3 MORE YEARS. WILL IT BE TOO LATE.
