Johnson one of two Democrats to support Patriot Act

WASHINGTON - Sen. Tim Johnson of South Dakota was one of two Democratic senators to support a vote on the USA Patriot Act Friday, saying the legislation is important for fighting terrorism.

The bill did not make it out of the Senate, however. Forty-one Democrats and five Republicans voted to continue a filibuster on the bill, preventing Republicans from getting the 60 votes they needed to stop debate and proceed to a vote.

...

Johnson and the state's other senator, Republican John Thune, agreed with them, both voting to end the filibuster.

"It is important to give our law enforcement officials the tools they need, while maintaining proper congressional and judicial oversight," Johnson said Friday.

5. As long as they vote for Reid
and don't criticise other Dems, they can wear their shorts on their head, for all I care.

10. South Dakota is a state where Tom Daschle was "too liberal."
The last election was vicious. It was like Republicans were driving along I-90 tossing money out of pick-up trucks. If Daschle was re-elected, we were all going to have to marry gay guys and burn American flags at the wedding ceremony! And it worked.

South Dakota is a very conservative state, although it produced great progressives like Sens. George McGovern and Jim Abourezk back in the day.

So I'm disappointed but not in the least surprised that Tim Johnson voted like that.

Our sole representative, Rep. Steph Herseth is also conservative, a "blue dog" Democrat," and she barely beat out a Republican bible-thumper.

But at least they're Democrats, right? Right?
