David Douglas was the kind of man who enjoyed smoking cigars, going to church and serving his country in the Army, a close friend said this morning.
"He was a people person," said Staff Sgt. Art Lemons of Louisville, who served with Douglas for 14 months in Iraq and called him Doug. "Our friendship was beyond work relations. We talked about everything. We discussed everything."
Douglas died sometime late Tuesday or early Wednesday from a single gunshot wound while sleeping in his Richmond home. He was home on leave for two weeks and was to report to Camp Atterbury for final processing this week.
Police are investigating the death as a homicide, though they have not ruled out suicide. A .357 magnum revolver was found at the scene, 405 S. 12th St. in Richmond.
"They are still waiting on the toxicology," said Detective Sgt. Brad Berner of the Richmond Police Department. "Part of it was to see if he was intoxicated, to see if that had a factor in it."
