U.S. pundits bash 'retarded cousin' Canada (Tucker Carlson)
Edited on Mon Dec-19-05 07:26 PM by sonicx
WASHINGTON (CP) - Canada has been described lately by a conservative U.S. television host as "a stalker" and a "retarded cousin."

Another pundit recently asked if Canadians weren't getting "a little too big for their britches." There's been a spate of Canada-bashing by right-wing media commentators in the United States ever since Prime Minister Paul Martin's complaints about lumber penalties and U.S. policy on climate change. His remarks prompted an unusual rebuke last week from the American ambassador.

The attacks on Canada have had web bloggers typing overtime and a non-profit group that's monitoring the trend, Media Matters for America, says it's disturbing.

...

Last week, MSNBC host Tucker Carlson, a well-known conservative pundit, let loose with a string of anti-Canada rants.

"Anybody with any ambition at all, or intelligence, has left Canada and is now living in New York," he said.

"Canada is a sweet country. It is like your retarded cousin you see at Thanksgiving and sort of pat him on the head. You know, he's nice but you don't take him seriously. That's Canada."

35. Well Tucker is like the crass old drunken uncle...
who doesn't know when to shut up, and ends up embarrasing everyone to death. He's the authority on every subject there is, and tells everyone at the table what their opinion should be. Just leave him alone and he'll just keep talking to himself about his glory days and what a good old boy he is. (From a recovering retarded Canadian cousin;) lol

38. Hmmm... I wonder if he can find it on a map?
Like most repubs, he probably thinks he is insulting some country 'over there' or 'up there' or wherever, not the country with whom we have had the longest peaceful border with.

As a descendent of one of the families that founded Quebec, I say ferme la bouche, chien. Quel incompetant!

in addition to an undergraduate degree of the sort that you were too lame to get- even after 4 years at Trinity college.

He was the one who egged on the big bullies (he was too scrawny and pathetic to do it himself)..yeah, that's Tucker. In the end, the pretty girl married the Canadian cousin, and they are living happily ever after. The Tucker-clone cousin is in prison, last you heard.

6. Here is what one Canadian is doing for people of Louisiana
http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20051217/stronach_canadaville_051217/20051217?hub=World

A controversial housing project built by Canadian business magnate Frank Stronach officially opened in the heart of Louisiana's bayou country on Saturday.

Some 120 victims of Hurricane Katrina will be moving into 49 three-bedroom, 1,300-square-foot homes on the outskirts of Simmesport, about 100 km from Baton Rouge.

It is part of a spread of more than 300-hectare spread of farmland, now dubbed "Canadaville," which will eventually serve as an organic farm for growing vegetables and raising cattle and poultry.

As part of a $10-million, five-year commitment, Stronach has agreed to pay for water, sewage and infrastructure upgrades in the town.

He has also provided funding for the town of 1,200 to hire another three police officers and purchase two new police cruisers.

I have no words to express the depth of my contempt for Tucker Carlson, who just smeared an entire group of Americans who had no choice in being born with limited mental capabilities.

Tucker Carlson has a choice not to act the way he does, or think the way he does, but he's too selfish to properly exercise his so-called intelligence. Shame, shame.

At any rate, he's in no position to start ragging on Canadians. We'll be talking about Peter Jennings, Neil Young, and Margaret Atwood long after Tucker Carlson has lasped into richly deserved obscurity.

53. From the Wikipedia entry....
Carlson was born in San Francisco, California. He is the son of Richard W. Carlson, who was president and CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting from 1992 to 1997. His stepmother is Patricia Carlson, heir to the Swanson frozen-food fortune.

Carlson completed private secondary education at St. George's School, Newport, Rhode Island. He then attended Trinity College in Connecticut for four years without obtaining a degree. Carlson describes his college experience thus:

"After four years, I had met a lot of interesting people, gone to a couple of classes and restored a motorcycle, and that was it. And so I wasted my time at college."

Does anybody really even watch Tucker Carlson? I know in Canada, nobody gives a fuck. Nobody even watches MSNBC (ditto Faux, unless one's in the mood for a laugh). I keep forgetting I even GET MSNBC.

Hopefully, if this, um..."story" gets legs (and I use the term "story" lightly; Carlson's a fucking nobody in both countries), it'll show Canadians what Stephen Harper "aspires" to be.

you have no influence.

Canada, in the time of the Soviet Union,
was a real country,
now, when somebody says 'Canada',
my first thought is, Monty Python's version of North America.

Crown Royal is nice, it is different, but not necessarily
better, than bourbon.
I don't have any prejudice againt the
people of the Spaghetti Dominion of Canada,
just because their 3047th government since WW2 has fallen.
How do things look for the Canadian hockey team?

Australia seems to have its own version of
a 'near abroad', and therefore kinda looks like it
is doing something, Canada has ?

Did I forget anything?

Ciao

or just his clone? What would be surprising is if you posted something positive about Canada, that would be shocking, all else is same old, same old.

I need the ratings. After all, I'm just trying to put food on my family.

by different standards.

They are nothing like"a low rent version of North Dakota". There is all the things that I put in my post.

Their citizens all have health care too. All those things alone put them at a higher level then we are.

I would happily trade their world reputation for ours now.

If this president's trampling on the Constitution is not stopped, I am going to send all of my children to Canada to school, and encourage them to make their homes there. They are very intelligent students, they all want to go into the sciences, and many intelligent people up here in the North Country of New York are all thinking the same thing.

Who will be left here? The sheeple who believe the earth is 6000 years old and that dinosaurs and man roamed the earth at the same time. Sad.

I enjoyed my visits to Canada and really like the people and the places. This comment isn't close to being funny - it just confirms what a complete asswipe Carlson is.

84. Lets Remember Jon Stewart vs. Tucker Carlson on Crossfire
Edited on Tue Dec-20-05 04:08 PM by JPZenger
Let's remember Jon Stewart vs. Tucker Carlson on Crossfire. Shortly after this exchange, Crossfire was cancelled. Here's some highlights/excerpts. The full text is at the link at the bottom.

CARLSON: Is John Kerry -- is John Kerry really the best? I mean, John Kerry has...
STEWART: Is he the best? I thought Lincoln was good.
CARLSON: Is he the best the Democrats can do?
STEWART: I had always thought, in a democracy -- and, again, I don't know -- I've only lived in this country -- that there's a process. They call them primaries.
I think, oftentimes, the person that knows they can't win is allowed to speak the most freely, because, otherwise, shows with titles, such as CROSSFIRE or "HARDBALL" or "I'm Going to Kick Your Ass" or...Will jump on it. ... I have privately, amongst my friends and also in occasional newspapers and television shows, mentioned this show as being bad....I felt ... I should come here and tell you that ... it's not so much that it's bad, as it's hurting America.
STEWART: Here's just what I wanted to tell you guys....Stop. Stop, stop, stop, stop hurting America.
STEWART: ... you're not too rough on them. You're part of their strategies. You are partisan, what do you call it, hacks.
CARLSON: ...I want to contrast our questions with some questions you asked John Kerry recently.
STEWART: If you want to compare your show to a comedy show, you're more than welcome to. ...
STEWART: I didn't realize that -- and maybe this explains quite a bit... is that the news organizations look to Comedy Central for their cues on integrity. ...I'm here to confront you, because we need help from the media and they're hurting us...(APPLAUSE)
CARLSON: ... I think you're a good comedian. I think your lectures are boring...
STEWART: Now, this is theater. It's obvious. How old are you?
CARLSON: Thirty-five.
STEWART: And you wear a bow tie. Now, listen, I'm not suggesting that you're not a smart guy, because those are not easy to tie....you're doing theater, when you should be doing debate...
...CARLSON: You had John Kerry on your show and you sniff his throne and you're accusing us of partisan hackery?
STEWART: Absolutely. You're on CNN. The show that leads into me is puppets making crank phone calls.
What is wrong with you? (APPLAUSE)
CARLSON: Well, I'm just saying, there's no reason for you -- when you have this marvelous opportunity not to be the guy's butt boy, to go ahead and be his butt boy. Come on. It's embarrassing.
STEWART: I was absolutely his butt boy. I was so far -- you would not believe what he ate two weeks ago.
STEWART: You know, the interesting thing I have is, you have a responsibility to the public discourse, and you fail miserably.
CARLSON: You need to get a job at a journalism school, I think.
STEWART: You need to go to one. The thing that I want to say is, when you have people on for just knee-jerk, reactionary talk...
CARLSON: thought you were going to be funny. Come on. Be funny.
STEWART: No. I'm not going to be your monkey.
STEWART: I watch your show every day. And it kills me...It's so -- oh, it's so painful to watch.
You know, because we need what you do. This is such a great opportunity you have here to actually get politicians off of their marketing and strategy...
CARLSON: We're going to take a quick break.
STEWART: No, no, no, please... Please. Please stop...

After the commercial break:

First question of Stewart from CARLSON: Tell us, what do you think about the Bill O'Reilly vibrator story?
...STEWART: You know what's interesting, though? You're as big a dick on your show as you are on any show."

Edited on Tue Dec-20-05 05:22 PM by LostinVA
I even see it used on here, sometimes. A Down's Syndrome boy who lived on my block when I was a kid was tormented by neighborhood kids who would call him this. The boy was just a sweetheart, and would just keep on going back for more like a kicked puppy, just wanting a friendly word. So... I don't like the word, Just imo.

They're not the ones who are having tantrums over the word "holidays", throwing around accusations that "you're either with us or against us" -- or lying to get other people into fights.

100. Yes
To those who suffer from developmental disabilities, "retarded" is perceived as analagous to "negro" for blacks. It is technically accurate, (retardation is a clinical term) but it's become an anachronism for the same reason.

In fact, promoting respectful language is even Washington State Law.

http://www.inclusiondaily.com/archives/04/03/031604waadv.htm

But I feel for the cousin. Going through life with a developmental disability would be hard enough. Enduring thanksgiving with Tucker Carlson would be intolerable.

101. Canada: Our Much Cooler Cousins
In another post, a writer referred to Canada as our "much cooler cousins." That is true, both literally and figuratively.

There was a great Malcolm in the Middle episode where they go visit their Canadian cousins, who they are meeting for the first time. The Canadian family is almost an exact duplicate of Malcolm's family, except the Canadian cousins are much cooler and have a much better life and are much better adjusted and have more friends. Then Reese starts to scare everyone with the great pleasure he takes in hunting small animals.
