Bush pardons Denver attorney
MDC counsel, now 49, was sentenced in '84 cocaine case

By Tillie Fong and Hector Gutierrez, Rocky Mountain News
December 21, 2005

A Denver lawyer was pardoned Tuesday by President Bush for drug-related crimes she committed more than two decades ago.

Wendy St. Charles, now 49, was among 11 people who received presidential pardons.

In 1984, she was sentenced to four years in prison in Illinois for conspiracy to conduct a narcotics enterprise and distribution of cocaine, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

She was also put on four years of special parole and four years of probation, which were to run consecutively with her sentence.

1. Isn't That Special!
What does a body have to do to get justice around here? Forgiving drug dealers, medals for liars and coverups, torture for innocents, and the beating goes on.

29. Bush Pardons Moonshiners, Bank Robber
Edited on Fri Dec-23-05 06:06 PM by leftchick
WASHINGTON - President Bush has granted 11 pardons, bringing to 69 the number of clemency orders he has issued since taking office five years ago, the Justice Department said.

Three moonshiners and a bank robber are among those pardoned, as is a Denver attorney with Republican political ties. The pardons were issued Tuesday, in keeping with a tradition of granting clemency during the holiday season.

One of those pardoned, Wendy St. Charles, is a lawyer for a Denver homebuilder, MDC Holdings, parent of Richmond American Homes, The Denver Post reported. St. Charles was convicted on drug charges in 1984 and sentenced to four years in prison.

MDC's chairman, Larry Mizel, has contributed more than half a million dollars to Republican campaigns along with his wife, Carol, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. A company spokeswoman did not immediately return a phone call from The Associated Press.

41. How does a guy like this get a presidential pardon?
<snip>

One of the moonshiners, Carl E. Cantrell of Monteagle, Tenn., said he was arrested at his still without ever selling a drop. He was convicted of federal liquor law violations in 1967 and sentenced to three years' probation.

"I wasn't trying to cause nobody no harm," he told The Knoxville News Sentinel. "I was just trying to make a living."

Yep, talks like a moonshiner alright! I didn't think they were around much anymore. I'd also be interested in how this guy could get a pardon. Obviously he must know somebody who knows the Bush family, or similar. Has this guy been running shine to the White House or something?? It wouldn't surprise me if Bush with all his money still can't stand those fancy liquors, and instead need some good ol' shine to get him going! And besides, this way there's no transaction records you'd have to get rid of if for some reason you needed to conceal your habit... :beer:

Merry Christmas DU! :toast:

45. I didn't know this;
The Constitution provides the president with the power to grant clemency. A presidential pardon can't expunge a conviction, but it can help regain rights such as voting and owning guns.

47. weird collection of pardonees.
drugs seem to be the most common thread, but all of them seem to be petty criminals with no real clear indication of why they were pardoned, beyond payoffs for influence or campaign contributions.

call me naive, but doesn't that equate to influence peddling or a bribe?
