McCain's plan for King Day speech worries S.C. blacks

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — A South Carolina lawmaker says his constituents are worried a potential presidential candidate will politicize Spartanburg's Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration.
State Rep. Harold Mitchell, D-Spartanburg, said some black residents have told him they are not happy about U.S. Sen. John McCain's plans to make a brief appearance at the Jan. 16 event before heading to a Republican fundraiser across town.

After the King event, the Arizona Republican is scheduled to participate in the Spartanburg County GOP annual banquet. That fundraiser also will feature both of South Carolina's U.S. senators, as well as Gov. Mark Sanford and U.S. Rep. Bob Inglis, R-S.C.

Spartanburg community relations director Mitch Kennedy said McCain's brief appearance at the King event is not politically motivated but said he would remind McCain's staff that the senator's remarks should remain focused on King and not politics.

McCain needs to do more than been seen with Blacks; if he's really interested in extending and promoting Dr. King's legacy he can call leaders in his party to support extending the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
