How Russian Oil Tycoon Courted Friends in U.S.(Carlyle Group connection)
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/05/international/europe/05YUKO.html?hp

n early 2001, as George W. Bush's administration moved into the White House, one of Russia's wealthiest men, Mikhail B. Khodorkovsky, sought a meeting with the new national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice. According to a former staff member, National Security Council analysts were asked to perform a background check.

Mr. Khodorkovsky did not get the meeting — part of the tycoon's efforts to secure approval from the American establishment — because of "allegations of past business improprieties," the former staff member said, also noting that Mr. Khodorkovsky spent heavily in Washington to court the Capitol's inner circle.

But Mr. Khodorkovsky's steady efforts to win access to other influential Americans have paid off. Last July, he met with Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham to discuss America's oil policy. Former President George H. W. Bush traveled to Russia in September and spoke at a dinner attended by Mr. Khodorkovsky.

That event prompted Moscow newspapers to speculate that the visit was part of an effort by American companies to secure a merger with Yukos Oil, where Mr. Khodorkovsky was chief executive until he quit on Monday in a swirl of fraud and embezzlement charges. His replacement, a Russian-born American, was confirmed yesterday.

The Carlyle Group, an investment bank that retained the elder Mr. Bush as an adviser until a few weeks ago, has a close business relationship with Mr. Khodorkovsky.

1. Replaced by a Russian born American? possibly a big contributor to dubya's
campaigns? And they don't give his name?

3. Simon G. Kukes, a Russian-born American
The scandal over Yukos, which Mr. Khodorkovsky founded, has not only left its founder in jail, but has also put three Americans at the helm of the company: Simon G. Kukes, a Russian-born American who was confirmed Tuesday as chief executive, replacing Mr. Khodorkovsky; Steven M. Theede, the new chief operating officer; and Bruce K. Misamore, the chief financial officer.

Yukos share rights 'transferred'

Jailed Russian tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky has passed control over
his shares in oil firm Yukos to associates abroad, according to
Sunday newspaper reports.

The Sunday Times reported that the voting rights to Mr Khodorkovsky's
shares had been transferred under an arrangement put in place prior
to his arrest on suspicion of tax evasion and fraud last week.

The newspaper named UK-based Lord Jacob Rothschild of the Rothschild banking dynasty as the recipient of the voting rights.

2. I didn't know that Poppy quit Carlyle.
I can't imagine that he'd actally give up such a lucrative job. Carlyle must be getting ready to perpetrate a huge sweetheart deal, and Senior didn't want his fingerprints on it, with Junior's re-selection right around the corner.

I betcha he's still on the inside, though.

5. I read somewhere....
....about a huge stock transaction of a Carlyle subsidiary in the last couple of days. There was some murmuring about it being related to Poppy's change of status -- some way for him to make a killing. If I find it again, I'll post it.

6. I posted about this on Monday/Tuesday including some of the
links between Rothschild and Kissinger, and how Khodorkovsky was 'groomed' since the mid-1990s:

9. "The rest of the story"
"Mr. Khodorkovsky spent heavily in Washington to court the Capitol's inner circle." Mr. Khodorkovsky is a Russian Jew with many ties to the American Jewish circle. It cannot be lost on anyone that Sharon visited Putin to talk about "UN resolutions" yeah, I bet. Keep your eyes on this situation to tell whether Putin will be more influenced by his own country or the Bush cartel.
