Iraqi Prisoner Kills Eight With Guard Gun
BAGHDAD, Iraq - An inmate in a Baghdad prison grabbed an assault rifle from a guard and opened fire on other guards and prisoners Wednesday, killing at least eight people and wounding three, police said.

The prisoner fired indiscriminately after grabbing the AK-47, killing four guards and four inmates, said Iraqi army Brig. Gen. Jalil al-Mehamadawi. The wounded were all inmates, he said.

Guards then overtook the gunman and restrained him, he said.

The prison was a Justice Ministry facility that also housed foreigners, officials said. The U.S. military had no immediate comment.

1. Iraq police say shoot prisoners in riot
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi police shot dead several prisoners in a shootout on Wednesday at a Baghdad military base after one prisoner grabbed a weapon from a guard, Interior Ministry officials and police sources said.

There was confusion over casualty figures. A police source and an Interior Ministry official said more than 20 prisoners were killed but another ministry official insisted there were 15 casualties, some of them only wounded, and that these included one dead police guard and one wounded officer.

The various accounts converged in saying that the trouble began when a prisoner managed to grab a weapon from one of the guards and shoot him. One Interior Ministry official said the guard was wounded while a second prisoner also took a Kalashnikov rifle from another guard and shot him dead.

And, as we've come to expect:

The U.S. military's account was slightly different. A statement by Sgt. Keith Robinson said "it was reported that 16 prisoners attempted to escape the facility after first storming the armory and obtaining an undetermined number of weapons."

Twenty detainees gunned down in Baghdad's military detention

Iraqi soldiers opened fire at a group of detainees in Baghdad's Iraqi army detention on Wednesday following an apparent escape attempt, killing 20 detainees and an army officer, a police source said.

"Iraqi soldiers allowed dozens of detainees to an open area in al-Adalah detention in Kadhumiyah district in northern Baghdad. One of the detainees took a rifle of one of the guards and opened fire at the guards," a police source told Xinhua.

"The detainee killed an army officer and wounded two guards, which prompted other guards to open fire randomly at the detainees and killed up to 20 of them," the source added.

The military facility of Kadhumiyah was one of Saddam Hussein's headquarters of the military intelligence.

    7. BBC: Iraq 'incapable of running jails'
Last Updated: Wednesday, 28 December 2005, 18:29 GMT

    Iraq 'incapable of running jails'

A senior Iraqi official has said the government is incapable of managing prisons, hours after
an attempted jail break left at least nine people dead.

Deputy Justice Minister for Prisons Bhushu Ibrahim Ali said the authorities lacked the technical
and financial capacities needed to supervise prisons.

The failed Baghdad escape bid was the result of negligence, he told the BBC.

He accused the government of asking the US to hand over control of Iraqi jails for domestic
    political purposes.
