Republicans say Spitzer made threat against Wall Street exec

December 28, 2005

ALBANY, N.Y. The state Republican Party is seeking an investigation into a claim by a former Wall Street executive that Attorney General Eliot Spitzer threatened him in a private conversation.

Spitzer is denying that he made any threats against John Whitehead, the appointed chairman of the state Lower Manhattan Development Corporation.

Last week, Whitehead wrote an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal in which he accused Spitzer of having threatened him during a telephone conversation held eight months before.

Whitehead says Spitzer told him he would -- quote -- "pay the price" for publicly criticizing the attorney general's investigation of insurance magnate Maurice Greenberg.

State GOP Requests Probe To See If Eliot Spitzer Threatened LMDC Head

December 27, 2005

The New York State Republican Party is demanding an investigation into whether Attorney General Eliot Spitzer threatened the head of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation.

LMDC Chairman and former Goldman Sachs executive John Whitehead accuses Spitzer of threatening him for writing an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal. The article complained that Spitzer's investigation of insurance mogul Hank Greenberg was being played up for the press.

According to Whitehead, Spitzer called him and said: “Mr. Whitehead, it's now a war between us and you've fired the first shot. I will be coming after you. You will pay the price. This is only the beginning and you will pay dearly for what you have done."

State Republican Chairman Stephen Minarik wants the Manhattan District Attorney to investigate.

1. How to commit crimes, the Republican way:
Edited on Wed Dec-28-05 05:23 AM by lvx35
1) identify who would have jurisdiction to prosecute you
2) call him and try to win his good graces. If he is not corruptable
3) say he threatened you so he goes on the defensive
4) commit your crime
5) cite any attempts to prosecute you as him carrying out his illegal threat.

Remember the main point, when you are doing wrong, accuse somebody else first, the best defense is to attack, attack, attack!

2. The GOP is terrified that Spitzer
will run for President (not in the '08 cycle, but at some point).

So he's getting the Hillary treatment.

4. Yup, yup, yup!
Honestly, I'm surprised that they did not go after him sooner. I guess they've been distracted a bit lately (by Fitz!).

5. They've considered him a "New York" problem for them.......
until he threw his hat into the New York gubernatorial race, now he's become a problem for the Republicans on a national scale. Spitzer is bullet-proof in New York. He's done more to help the people of New York than Pataki could ever hope of doing during his tenure. Good luck to the GOP in trying to find the chink in Spitzer's armor, there isn't any. In typical Republican fashion they'll fabricate some hyped-up, bullshit crap like this in a vain attempt to tarnish his image. The people of New York State love him and my only hope is that in '08 our next Democratic President will immediately tap him for Attorney General of the United States. You want to see some VERY scared Corporate whores? Spitzer would be their worst nightmare. The climate of fear and greed so cherished by America's Corporate political machine would come to a screeching halt. They have every reason to be terrified of Spitzer because he is a champion of the people, not special interests.
I can hardly wait until he's our next Governor!

8. He's a model of what a state Attorney General
ought to be. We need 49 more bulldogs just like him -- I'm talking progressive populists, ready to kick corporate ass -- to get elected attorney general.

It's probably the most important position, from state to state, in which the right person could make the biggest difference, particularly in terms of turning back the corporate takeover of our government.

Just ask the NSA for their recordings of Spitzer's phone calls.

10. IMHO, it's not even remotely possible that Spitzer did this....
...Someone should ask Whitehead if he has a tape of the alleged conversation...if not, piss off.

two things: put up, or shut up.

Produce the tape, or quit his bitching!

approval ratings from 65% to 65.1%.

16. Ironic. Rudolph Giuliani made his career by prosecuting Wall Street
figures like Michael Milkin in federal court. He was considered a hero because he went after organized crime and white collar crime. Now, here's Spitzer being made to look like a rogue prosecutor who threatens innocent businessmen with a shakedown for the sole purpose of building his candidacy for governor of New York.

Moral: Republican, good. Democrat, bad.

21. Not a mention of Senator Stevens threatening everyone that voted against
the ANWR bill he placed in the Defense budget. He made his threat on the Senate floor for all to hear.. Anybody that votes against ANWR will get absolutely nothing out of Steven's committee. IOW they will pay dearly for not supporting Stevens... No less a threat than what they say Spitzer made..
