Poll: Not all find economy news uplifting
Americans say they don't feel the income gains

WASHINGTON - A large segment of Americans are not buying into the good news about the economy that the Bush administration has been bragging about.
As calendar year 2005 neared a close, administration officials hailed the latest Commerce Department report that the economy grew at a healthy annual rate of 4.1 percent in the third quarter.

...

Seneca Nicholson of Red Bank, N.J., a 48-year-old mother of three boys - two of them teenagers - hasn't seen an improving economy.

"I think that the economy is doing terrible and they are putting up a lot of smoke screens," said Nicholson. "It's propaganda almost."

A mid-December telephone poll of 1,100 people showed that 40 percent thought the economy was getting worse, compared with just 30 percent who described it as getting better. The poll, conducted by American Research Group, had a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

3. But it is doing better
for those with money. If your income is dependant on the stock market or real estate investments, you're all set.

If you depend on a flat wage (without stock options and the like) you're screwed.

4. Gee, ya think?
Considering that the Dow lost all of its gains for 2005 in one day yesterday, I have no idea where the media get off with this idea that the economy is just steaming ahead on all fronts. Even in this story, they cite their poll which showed a 40-30 plurality who think the economy is getting worse.

Maybe it's time to open up the discussion about the economy to include people other than folks enjoying six- and seven-figure annual sinecures.

7. I think you could actually say "gain for the last 5 years".
Looking at a chart, the market has gone pretty much no where.

10. The stock market hasn't done diddly squat.....
since Dopey stole the election. All it's done is go up and down the same amount. It's stagnant.

My economic situation is not half as good as the Clinton years.

6. Under Clinton, I had pretty much full employment, a 401K,
and health insurance. I was unemployed 10 months this year, 6 months last year, and 6 the year before. I am currently again unemployed. I just heard job market is going great. Not for programmers. The jobs I've had over the last 3 years have had 1/2 of the people from India.

9. Why, Bloomberg says everything is great!
U.S. Consumer Confidence Rises to 103.6, Highest Since August

Dec. 28 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. consumer confidence rose in December to the highest in four months, helped by falling gasoline prices and an improving labor market.
