NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Under pressure from community activists, the city agreed Wednesday not to begin
demolishing thousands of hurricane-damaged homes before a hearing next week in front of a judge.

The agreement came hours after activists sued to stop the city from moving ahead with plans to raze
buildings without court hearings or owners' consent.

A hearing is set for Jan. 6 before a state judge.

Last week, city officials announced their intention to demolish within weeks about 2,500 buildings
that inspectors found to be dangerous unstable after they were flooded by Hurricane Katrina.

1. A thread in GD the other day inquired about this...

People could not understand why there was still so much wreckage in the city 4 months after the hurricane. This is a large part of reason why.

2. Yes, it appears
that 100 percent of Katrina's ills are not GWB's fault. Only about 90, I'd say.

what is the motive of these community activists? who are they? because the end result of all their efforts will be to screw people who have totalled houses

all they are doing is screwing people out of a chance to get their demolished houses done at no cost to homeowners, these homeowners will end up having to pay $4K for something that could have been done by gov't for free -- and these people DON'T have an extra $4k to throw in the garbage

it is all but impossible to get your house declared totalled, look at this picture, THIS is a red-tagged house, one of the special few 2,500, this is from the lower 9th ward, it's the house on the right, yeah, that's it, that was once a house, that bundle of sticks with a red tag on it

the people fighting the demolition of messes like this are being cruel and i don't know why, the homeowners need closure, if your home is destroyed, let it be declared destroyed, so you can go ahead and get the damn thing bull-dozed, get the damn insurance money, and be able to start over

i'm getting tired of sharing my friend's story who can't get his house declared totalled, even tho it IS, but suffice it to say it is no kindness and it is completely financial destruction for him that city & insurance co. refuse to accept the obvious and accept that the structure is destroyed

and progressives are cheering this on?

jeebus

be real, for financial reasons the gov't is happy to look for a way NOT to red-tag home and screw the homeowner, who will end up paying the bill for demolition if gov't doesn't, follow the money, "community activists" i wonder
