WSJ: Laura Bush Takes a Larger Role (Admin hopes to get lift from Pickles)

http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB113589800171734179-OpbFZtb3_zmRh1i9rwNZGAE1NRw_20061229.html?mod=tff_main_tff_top

Laura Bush Takes a Larger Role

Administration Hopes for Lift
From First Lady's Popularity

WASHINGTON -- In retooling her staff for her husband's second term, first lady Laura Bush made her wishes clear.

"She was very focused on hiring a chief of staff who understood policy," says former Commerce Secretary Donald Evans, a close friend of the Bush family. The eventual winner, former State Department official and White House hand Anita McBride, was questioned less about the White House social schedule than on whether she could arrange a solo trip to Afghanistan. In March, after weeks of quiet planning, Mrs. Bush and Ms. McBride gave staffers just 24 hours' notice before traveling to Kabul.

At a time when the U.S. is eager to repair its image around the world, the administration has found a willing envoy in Mrs. Bush, who also traveled this year to the Middle East and Africa. While some besieged Bush administration figures are hunkered down, the first lady has assumed a larger role -- and not merely on matters for which first ladies typically draw attention.

...

In one surprising way, Mrs. Bush is an apt emotional complement to her husband. "I'm a crier," Mr. Bush once said.

Mrs. Bush is not. Her composure was on display this summer, when she met in Rwanda with a 13-year-old orphan raising her younger siblings. While the girl's story left staff members in tears, a grim-faced Mrs. Bush rose from her seat, walked to her next stop in a nearby chapel, sat down in a front pew and smiled.

3. She usually looks so stoned
I doubt she can focus on anything.

The last paragraph (above) certainly says a lot about Pickles...She smiles after a story leaves everyone else in tears? Is she that cold hearted or so drugged she can't feel anything?

5. Bet her approval ratings go down
The only reason she's popular is because she's not seen that often. They think that Laura's popularity will cause George's ratings to rise, but since pretty much everything Bush touches turns to shit, I'll be curious to see if he drags her down with him.

23. I think you're right.
She's a first lady who has absolutely NO influence on ANY social issues whatsoever. Nancy Reagan had "just say no." Jaqueline Kennedy made the beautification of the White House her pet project. As far as I can tell most First Ladies had some kind of project or interest but I'll be darned if I know of anything important Pickles has done.

Laura looks sort of smashed or zoned out like she's just swigged down a Xanax with a jigger of rum.

34. This was my thought too
I thought the wives were supposed to stay in the background quietly and smile? She should have a simple little project about education connected to her background and that's it. The fact that they keep pushing her shows how desperate they are.

She is a shell of a person, a complete phony with no more depth than the man she married. If she has high poll numbers it's because no one can say anything bad about her because she is so much of a nothing not based on any actual feeling like admiration or respect.

Once she gets overexposed and connected to all that the public rejects she'll be lumped in with all the other hated low-pollsters.

We should take hope that they are this desperate to push her - it shows that their internal polling reveals just how hated they are.

Flat out funniest bit EVER on tv. I Tivo'd it and I show everyone. Steven Colbert essentially played an "unedited" version of her comedy bit. It had her talking about GW jerking off a couple of farm animals. Hilarious.

16. Killing Me Softly......
I felt all flushed with fever,
Embarrassed by the crowd,
I felt he found my letters and read each one out loud.
I prayed that he would finish,
But he just kept right on strumming my pain with his fingers,
Singing my life with his words,
Killing me softly with his song,
Killing me softly with his song,
Telling my whole life with his words,
Killing me softly with his song

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Oh my, lump in the bed
How I've missed you.
Roses are redder
Bluer am I
Seeing you kissed by that charming French guy.
The dogs and the cat, they missed you too
Barney's still mad you dropped him, he ate your shoe
The distance, my dear, has been such a barrier
Next time you want an adventure, just land on a carrier.

26. Using polls to influence public opinion
NOT TO REFELCT IT.

I've been trying to tell everyone this for years. Don't swallow the non-sense that comes out of these cheap media polls- especially Gallop.

They have just as much validity (maybe even less) than the corporate media who hires the companies to do them.

I won't even go into the shoddy, equivocal methodology.

Frankly, I cringe every time a DU'er jumps to their tune and buys into their "conclusions."

35. When Poppy started having problems , PR Campaign for Babs launched.
Poppy's polls were tanking, he was thought to lack "vision" and be out of touch with average Americans. That's when the PR people kicked into gear and turned frumpy Babs (the sarcastic dragon lady) into the pearl wearing, charming homebody with a great sense of humor who even wrote a book about her dog "Millie" that thousands of children just loved...shows what they think they can do for Laura.

The Bushies lack imagination. But, they've been playing by the same "script" so long they don't know how to change. And in the end they lose. If it wasn't for corrupt elections and the mighty right wing propaganda machine the little devil spawn and his drugged wife would have been out of the White House with 04.

I don't think Laura's African trip or trip to Afghanistan did much in the polls for the Chimp. She got more play out of talking about Bush milking a horse at the Press Club Whore Fest than either of those two trips, methinks.

Pickles is the only member of the Bush Empire who can't be, well, PICKED on. She's the only one who can get Georgie's messages out to the public unscathed because no one is even going to question, never mind contradict her. That would equate to picking on, well, someone's WIFE. It's another perfect example of President Mightymouse's innate cowardice.

He got all the others down pat....including the Cleausau look when opening doors the wrong way or riding bikes into trees. Did ya see him doing the Homes for Humanity photo Op? He took 15 whacks at a tiny 8 penny nail already started....never did finish and the TV stations yanked it quickly as the footage revealed a gurly mon grip on the hammer and hitting the nail like an 6 year old.

He does everything HIS WAY and wonders why he is not POPULAR? That in itself reveals a desperate man outta control and Bush being himself, without good ideas and solutions....

"While the girl's story left staff members in tears, grim-faced Mrs. Bush rose from her seat, walked to her next stop in a nearby chapel, sat down in the front pew and smiled." I doubt any bush family member has an ounce of compassion, certainly they don't show it, in action or deed. Quite the opposite, in fact. Sickening family. :puke:
