Insurgents Strike U.S. Compound in Mosul

Wednesday November 5, 2003 6:31 PM
By ROBERT H. REID Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - U.S. forces in the northern city of Mosul came under attack Wednesday as insurgents fired rocket-propelled grenades at a convoy and barracks, and a hand grenade exploded near another military convoy in the city center.

Two Iraqi civilians were killed when a rocket-propelled grenade struck their car after apparently missing a military convoy, Sgt. Chris Ryder said. An American soldier also was wounded.

An Iraqi teenager was also killed in a hand grenade blast near Mosul's city hall, hospital sources said. Two others teens and a U.S. soldier were wounded. <snip>

Separately, a U.S. soldier died of wounds sustained from a ``non-hostile gunshot'' at a Baghdad checkpoint, the military said. <snip>

1. Is there still a news blackout on the compound bombing yesterday?
I haven't seen anything more about it.

4. I was wondering earlier why it has been so quiet. Maybe the black-out
is like the war on terror, or the energizer bunny.

5. Meanwhile Hoon and US State say "Iraq is calm"
Seems dead don't count.

In any case, there are openings for Judges in Iraq.

9. This isn't the first time they've blacked out the news
I'm afraid that within a day or two there will be another big incident that the Pentagon won't be able to ignore. The blackouts seem to be an invitation for that sort of thing.

7. Will someone please tell me, what's a 'non-hostile gunshot'?

As far as I'm concerned, any bullet that hits an american body is a hostile gunshot.

Or is that what used to be called 'fragging'?

8. Some are suicides

But since this soldier was at a checkpoint with other soldiers rather than in a barracks all alone, I'd guess this was an accidental discharge. Makes sense; soldiers are jumpy from all the attacks so they keep their fingers on the trigger ready to fire whenever a car pulls up to the checkpoint. Sooner or later you're gonna slip up, forget to safety the weapon, and hit one of your buddies by accident.

On edit, fragging is a good posibility too in this case.
