Towards 'an axis of good' (in Latin America - US not receptive)
Evo Morales, the president-elect of Bolivia, will travel to Venezuela this week, fresh from a visit to Cuba. But he would have been happy to travel to the US – except that Washington did not invite him, his spokesman said.

The Bolivian leader has good relations with Fidel Castro, in Cuba, and Hugo Chavez, in Venezuela, who are both critics of George W Bush’s regime in the US. However, Morales is not opposed to developing ties with the United States, Alex Contreras said on Saturday.

Morales, who will also fly to Europe this week, would have gone to Washington as well if he had been asked, Contreras said. His close ties with his Latin peers “do not aim at an axis of evil; rather, to an axis of good”, the spokesman said.

The president-elect is prepared to talk as long as diplomatic conditions are different from what they have been before,” Contreras said.

If that doesn't happen, “unfortunately, relations with the United States can deteriorate badly”, he said.

Officials in Washington have been fretting about the relationship between Presidents Morales, Chavez and Castro, which they fear as part of a Latin-American tilt to the left.

bush & co are fretting about these socialist countries chumming it up with each other, looking like a lot of communism coming into our hemisphere, Condi-- whatcha gonna do?, but wait, they are not terrorists, and are dedicated to improving the lives of their people. rather a dilemma for imperialist american policy.

personally I like this 'Axis of Good', I think we should extend a hearty welcome to president-elect Morales.

1. Now that I know more about
the world and the meaning of words..I'm not so sure what the evil is in "communism" and why it frightens people like joe mccarthy and gwankerbush?

2. The WH greatly underestimates the strenght of the S.A.'n
people! And, they love their land, and are still close to it. They will not let the free trade crapola that the US spews USE/ABUSE their resources.

3. and don't forget Brazil!
Actually that makes it more than 3 countries (which I thought was the unofficial requirement for an "axis" of anything?).

4. Oh yeah - here we go again - fomenting and concocting hate for these
leaders and citizens because they are afraid they will become communists. Ho ho. The sickle is alive again.

To be fair - our leaders have built U.S. Military bases in Paraguay and tell ius it is because of the someone's fear of terrorists who are said to be crossing borders between Brazil, Argentina, etc. Now, they don't say which kind of terrorists. We might be left to think that they are al-Queda terrorists.

Paraguay - the new home of Rev Moon who has bought millions of acres of land - Paraguay - part home to the world's largest water source. Paraquay where their President is a good friend of our PNAC and baron leaders.

5. Sadly, the US is so busy carrying the PNAC water that it has blown the
opportunity to make a great alliance with S. America and to spread a higher standard of living among our neighbors to the south in a mutually beneficial alliance. We are just so stupid and arrogant and in love with the gun...er, the bomb, that nothing else matters as long as the elite in the US continue to get their tax breaks and feed at the public trough unencumbered by law or morality.

9. Observe the forthcoming Mexican elections.
Andrés Manuel López Obrador tipped to win (unless legal tricks or more covert action take him out first).

10. It's not communism. It's socialism.
There's a world of difference, and the failure to make that distinction is something the *bush regime is desperately hoping for..
