BAGHDAD : The governor of Najaf shut down government offices in the main city of the central Iraqi province to protest a lack of security, as US-led forces and Iraqis working with them came under increasingly bold attacks.

Meanwhile, the current president of the interim Governing Council said he would visit Turkey later this month in a bid to ease the crisis over the possible deployment of Turkish troops in Iraq.

And in Washington, the Pentagon said US troops had captured two former Iraqi generals suspected of masterminding attacks on coalition forces in the flashpoint city of Fallujah.

Governor Haidar Mehdi Matar al-Mayyali launched an open-ended strike in Najaf after leading a silent march to denounce the slaying of a local judge who was investigating officials of the ousted regime.

1. Another great day in the neighborhood
Najaf, Fallujah, Mossul, Baghdad are all falling apart. I wonder what other Iraqi cities are in chaos that we haven't been told about yet?
