Israel destroys US-built wells
Israel destroys US-built wells

By Justin Huggler in Jerusalem
05 November 2003

The US has reportedly complained after the
Israeli army destroyed wells built for civilians in
Gaza by an American government aid agency.
Huge areas have been demolished by the
Israelis in the Gaza Strip in recent weeks,
including more than 150 homes.

The wells had just been dug by the United States
Agency for International Development (USAid). A
few months ago the agency announced a $20m
(£12m) project to rebuild infrastructure including
roads, electricity supply lines and sewers in the
occupied territories.

The agency was reporting good progress. But its
workers were dismayed when they turned up to finish the wells and found that
their work had been destroyed. A source at the American embassy said that
when USAid complained, the Israelis told them that they demolished the wells
because Palestinian militants had been hiding in them. . .

2. Wells
Take away their water, hope they leave, to save Israel the bad PR of outright ethnic cleansing. It's happening before our very eyes, but the world does nothing, says nothing.

7. Didn't the israelis elect Sharon?
And didn't they do so because of his hard line against muslims?

10. Didn't we elect Bush?
Addmittedly with a little help from Katherine Harris, but we also elected *'s dad, Reagan, Nixon, Hoover... blaming a whole country for the actions of its elected leaders is just wrong. Do we blame the Palestinians for having elected Arafat? No, of course not, even though he's not much better than Sharon is.

I say this next from a fairly rabid pro-Israel standpoint--

I've always supported Israel's hardline stance against terrorists (e.g., I think that tearing down their houses is a good thing). Sharon, however, is a jackass, and his policies go WAY beyond "hard line." He's got a stick and no carrot, and Sharon and his boys have left many Palestinians with little choice. Destroying wells, bulldozing whole neighborhoods... it's insanity.

So, while a hardline stance is one thing, what Sharon is doing is a whole other ball of wax, and I don't think it's appropriate to demonizze the entire nation of Israel even if they DID elect him.

26. Sharon and the IDF.
Little individual sock puppets with limited ideaologies support this madness. Enlightened folks like you and myself can only shake our heads and observe. All this for a insignificent piece of sand. We in Florida wonder at this madness as well on our own insignificent piece of sand. Why is the madness being played out on property with so little real value? Boggles the mind........yes?

27. Where else do they have to go?
Millions of Jews were butchered in Germany and now they are standing ground once again against those that want to kill each and every one.

Israel and the Jewish will ALWAYS have my support and those that wish harm upon them will never succeed as long as I can help fight against them.

8. This is such bullshit. "Hiding in wells"? Even a full size ag well
casing is only about 12". How many people could hide in a 12" tube? They just want to kill the water supply, so they can takethe land. Apartheid marches on in Israel, and then our idiot servile Congress gives the fascist Sharon/Likud another couple of billion.

This is so disgusting. But then, what is Sharon/Likud doing these days that's not disgusting? It's made all the worse to, in that they have made the U.S. accomplises in their crimes. I resent them more every day, and resentment will grow too, as we watch Sharon, his U.S. allies AIPAC, and their friends in PNAC, all work for the "re-election" (sic) of Bush.

Bush and Sharon. A marriage made in hell.

14. What many find disgusting
Terrorists hiding in wells to place their bombs meant to kill women and children. I fail to see how Israel can be blamed for trying to protect its people.

19. The wells in question...
...were located in Gaza. How does Israel protect 'its people' by destroying wells in Gaza? Do Israeli women and children travel to these wells to draw water? I doubt it. Do Israeli soldiers frequent these wells? Again highly doubtful. Who exactly is being protected here?

21. I have been around longer than the state of Israel.

for as long as I can remember, Israel has been taking Palestinian land. we used to talk about Israel growing 'one furrow at a time." If a Palestinian family has been on a plot of land for centuries, it mean nothing to Sharon. They can seize their land for no reason. Because the family did not have a bill of sale for the land, they do not own it in the eyes of Israel.

What if your family has worked that land for centuries, caring for the olive groves that have enabled your family to thrive, then you find the Sharon government has claimed your land for new Israeli settlements? what would you do if you have no legal recourse? Would you stand by as Israeli bulldozers destroy your home, and your family history?

22. What would I do?
I'd take it up with Jordan for throwing us out. With the vast amount of Arab land that Palestinian have been evicted from and dumped on Israel's
domain I would demand some of it. Israel has been pushed to the sea and it's long overdue they made a stand.

Israel is the victim here and her neighbors need to help the Palestinians in a positive way instead of selling them suicide belts to kill Jews.

Or they are not pushed up against the sea? Israel is surrounded by those that want to destroy them and I'm supposed to believe they deserve it?

Not likely.

12. Most of the land grab by Israelis is really about WATER
It has been since 1948. This something the Israelis don't want anyone to focus on. If the American people only knew and understood about the money ...tax-payer dollars that we have given to Israel. But the wingnuts do a good job of convincing the dittoheads that their tax dollars are wasted on "those minorities."

25. So let me get this straight........
US taxpayers fund an aid agency that constructs wells for Palestinians.....

They simulataneously make huge contributions to Israel's military, which destroys the wells made by the US aid agency.....

Doesn't anybody else find this situation absurd?

It's almost as if somebody somewhere is making a huge pile of cash by getting the US involved in continuous, cyclical armed conflicts...........

:eyes:

It's like China, where total employment is claimed thanks to genius ideas like constructing new sections of road whilst simultaneously pulling up and rebuilding the section you built yesterday.....

34. this is about to actually get ugly :-(
remember this -

in the middle east, they have more oil than they can possibly use - christ - they supply most of the world!

but the one thing they do not have - is potable water.

all of these wars over there, .every. .single. .one. has been ultimately fought over water rights.

this latest infitata was launched over waste water rights. i shudder to think whats going to happen over removal of potable water from a population center.
