Dean Set to Get Major Union Endorsement
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 7:54 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Howard Dean is getting a prized presidential endorsement from the AFL-CIO's largest union, top officials from the Service Employees International Union told at least three Democratic campaigns Wednesday night.

The endorsement, to be announced Thursday, is raising hopes in Dean circles that the former Vermont governor and Democratic front-runner also can win backing from another politically powerful union that so far has remained neutral, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

The SEIU endorsement will be announced after the union's 63-member executive board meets with Dean on Thursday, campaign sources said, insisting on anonymity.

SEIU spokeswoman Sara Howard said Dean is the only candidate being considered, but the board could decide not to endorse anyone.

This is MAJOR!

Looks like those lame attempts to take Dean down didn't work.

Shame on you Gephardt, Edwards and Kerry. Don't let the dust hit you in the face!!!

5. Innternational Association of Fire Fighters.
They happen to be very powerful and influential in their communities they serve.

Post 9-11, the fire fighters are THEE endorsement. And Kerry didn't have to hoodwink anyone to get the nomination. They endorsed him based on his record...NOT fake populist rhetoric.

7. And when that endorsement was pending...
Dean got together with two other candidates to claim that Kerry was "anti-firefighter."

Oh, that's right, he didn't.

I have to agree with you, RisF. I've not seen Dean coming together with other candidates to try and stifle any group who is wishing to support a different candidate. I can't believe with all the work there is to be done out there with potential voters just in Iowa and New Hampshire alone that some of these candidates wish to spend their time trying to convince a panel NOT to endorse Dean. I think if they had spent their time a little wiser, the unions would be impressed with THEM and would have endorsed THEM. Maybe they see Dean for what he really is: a person who can be successful without backstabbing.

12. So the union members are all idiots for "falling for rhetoric"?
Pretty arrogant to assume they're not endorsing Dean on his record ain't it? :eyes:

15. WOW Noordam!!!.......Dean reminds me a little of Franklin D Roosevelt.
He has chuztpah and grand workable ideas that can turn the tide!!!

He has charisma that people will listen to.

No more pretty faces. People are desparate thanks to Bush's fear
strategy.

16. AAFSME to follow?
Has anyone heard anything about the possibility of the largest public employees union also endorsing Dean - I remember
hearing some discussiln of this possibility last week - I believe they are affiliated with the AFL-CIO so that could be a major blow to Gephart if they follow suit - particularly if other major unions jump on the bandwagon as well.
