Bush Listens to Suggestions on Iraq (from former cabinet officers)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060105/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_17

WASHINGTON - President Bush promised to "take to heart" suggestions on Iraq he heard Thursday from former secretaries of defense and state who have disagreed with his approach there.

The president joined Gen. George Casey, the top American commander in Iraq, and Zalmay Khalilzad, the U.S. ambassador in Baghdad, to give a detailed briefing on Iraq to more than a dozen foreign policy leaders from previous administrations, split nearly evenly between Democrat and Republican. Current Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld also helped update the former secretaries.

The White House's hope was that the prominent figures — many of whom have publicly opposed Bush on Iraq — would be persuaded by the president's argument that he has what he called a "dual-track strategy for victory," and they would then spread the word.

The president then offered a quick summation of his strategy in Iraq that, while not getting into detail, appeared unchanged.

"On the one hand, we will work to have a political process that says to all Iraqis, the future belongs to you. On the other hand, we'll continue to work on the security situation there," Bush said. "We're making darn good progress."

Ummm, did he listen or just smile for the camera. My take is that he can't really hear anybody else.

1. Wait, is that Colin Powell?
Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 11:37 AM by LeftNYC
Didnt they not listen to him in the beginning? But instead trotted him out and took any credibility that he had away in front of the UN.

Poor Bastard. He proabably wanted to stay in bed.

is Cheney asleep? And Condi hates the fact that she has to listen to people who are much more credible and knowledgeable then she is...

4. He and Albright look really steamed
I hope they make statements.

The idea that bush -petty, vindictive, and ideologically rigid- would seriously consult with critics is incredible.

25. Yes, I think so too.
I took another look at the photo of Bush. Notice how he has his hands out in the air. He's gesturing, making a point.

It's all about HIM. And look at Madeline Albright. Doesn't she look pissed? I heard a comment from her on the radio the other day. She said, "this was a war of choice". Deadly words.

26. "stragegy...appeared unchanged by the give-and-take"
The president's quick summation of his strategy in Iraq, while not getting into detail, appeared unchanged by the give-and-take.

You're right: a photo op, that is already being spun to diminish the position of his critics:

Participants told reporters outside the West Wing afterward that there had been some dissent gently voiced, but they wouldn't describe it.

"When you are in the presence of the president of the United States, I don't care if you've been a devout Democrat for the last hundred years, you're likely to pull your punches to some degree," said Lawrence Eagleburger, a secretary of state under former President George H.W. Bush. "Now, there was some criticism. But it was basically, you haven't talked to the American people enough. And it was very mild."

Gentle voices? Pulled punches? MILD? I'm sure those words, which all have connotations linked closely with "weak", were just off-the-cuff remarks- but that's the first reported comment from an attendee. Eagleburger must be trying to get back on the Christmas card list.

34. That Wasn't A Discussion, It Was A Campaign
Edited on Fri Jan-06-06 07:49 AM by wellst0nev0ter
WASHINGTON, Jan. 5 - Colin Powell said nothing - a silence that spoke volumes to many in the White House today.

His predecessor, Madeleine Albright, was a bit riled after hearing an exceedingly upbeat 40-minute briefing to 13 living former secretaries of state and defense about how well things are going in Iraq. Saying the war in Iraq was "taking up all the energy" of President Bush's foreign policy team, she asked Mr. t Bush whether he had let nuclear programs in Iran and North Korea spin out of control, and Latin America and China policy suffer by benign neglect.

"I can't let this comment stand," Mr. Bush shot back, telling Ms. Albright and the rare assembly of her colleagues, who reached back to the Kennedy White House, that his administration "can do more than one thing at a time."

The Bush administration, the president insisted, had "the best relations of any country with Japan, China and Korea," and active programs to win alliances around the world.

That was, according to some of the participants, one of the few moments of heat during an unusual White House effort to bring some of its critics into the fold and give a patina of bipartisan common ground to the strategy that Mr. Bush has laid out in recent weeks for Iraq.

But if it was a bipartisan consultation, as advertised by the White House, it was a brief one. Mr. Bush allowed 5 to 10 minutes this morning for interchange with the group - which included three veterans of another difficult war, the one in Vietnam: Robert S. McNamara, Melvin R. Laird and James R. Schlesinger. Then the entire group was herded the Oval Office for what he called a "family picture."

8. I'm an optimist at heart
and I don't see how this could be a bad thing... is it possible that he actually figured out that what he's doing in Iraq isn't working and he needs some help?

(thoughtful pause)

In this particular photo, condi's body language shows the OPPOSITE of
listening to Bush, who appears to be wildly gesturing with his hands to
make a pointless point. In fact, the whole crowd appears detached and dazed.

24. Real class act...
Lesley Stahl on U.S. sanctions against Iraq: We have heard that a half million children have died. I mean, that's more children than died in Hiroshima. And, you know, is the price worth it?

Secretary of State Madeleine Albright: I think this is a very hard choice, but the price--we think the price is worth it.

--60 Minutes (5/12/96)

Break a few eggs, ends justifies the means...

But why did Albright bother to go...democrats were suppose to boycott this so as NOT to give Bush his non-partisan concensus photo-op over Iraq...

A Real Class Act would have said 'fuck you...you didn't bother to talk us for the last 4 years...go to hell'

18. I think he's trying to bully them into supporting an Iran attack
of some sort. One of those "everyone thought" type of things. I heard a news report a couple of days ago that Condi's efforts to gain support against Iran have "fallen flat".

This 'meeting' is a sham and the attendees know it!

The article is all about Bush... Bush "listened" to suggestions, what were the suggestions? Bush said things are going great over there, what did all those other people say?

This was just a photo op, and it's pathetic.

20. For a moment, reading that subject line, I had hope. Silly me.
Then I read this:
The White House's hope was that the prominent figures — many of whom have publicly opposed Bush on Iraq — would be persuaded by the president's argument that he has what he called a "dual-track strategy for victory," and they would then spread the word.

Bush isn't looking for input, he's deluded himself into thinking that these people will offer support for his failed mission in Iraq!

I pray these former officials are wise enough not to give it to him.

I just want to smack the sh*t outta him every time that bastard utters that tired phrase.

163 people dead in Iraq in the last 2 days.
5 US soldiers killed today
US funds for reconstruction being severed
Iran-lite forming in the new government
Taliban-esque repression in multiple areas of the country

"We're making darn good progress."

Indeed.

23. WaPo has a little more info on what was said....
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/05/AR2006010500254.html

"Not everybody around this table agreed with my decision to go into Iraq. I fully understand that," the president said, sitting at a long table in the Roosevelt Room with his guests arrayed silently around him. "But these are good solid Americans who understand that we've got to succeed now that we're there. I'm most grateful for the suggestions they've given. I take to heart the advice."

"He heard some things he did not like. He heard some things he did like," said Melvin Laird, a Pentagon chief for Nixon. "That's the kind of meeting you want."

was a scene from a James Bond movie? You know, where Spectre is meeting with some folks in a plane at 35,000 feet, and one of the guys, (Number 3 or something) says something stupid, and all of the sudden, the floor opens under his chair.

I keep looking around in the background for "Odd-job" with his derby hat guillotine ready to take care of anyone that gets out of line.

Matter of fact, if Cheney were a bit taller, he could pass for "Jaws"

36. That was a photo-op. He wasn't listening. Just corraborating, rewriting
history (with all living Sec. of Defense/State) so as to 'erase' all basis for prior war crimes allegations. Just getting their "reasons/facts for war" straight...as the true reasons 'why-not spread.

This whole photo-op disgusts me. Shrub actually listening, soliciting suggestions? Please! An ol' dog, and ol' stubborn dog does NOT learn new tricks...nor does he want to.
