Kerry likens Pat Robertson to tin-horn dictator, petty thug...
http://rawstory.com/news/2005/Kerry_demands_apology_for_Robertson_remarks_0106.html

Senator John Kerry (D-MA) called for an apology from Rev. Pat Robertson for comments that suggested Sharon's stroke was a punishment from God, RAW STORY can reveal.

"It is beyond shocking to think that as Prime Minister Sharon fights for his life, Pat Robertson would attack his character and disparage the risks Ariel Sharon took to bring peace and security to Israel," the Massachusetts Democrat said in a statement this morning.

"At a time like this, you'd expect bigoted tin-horn dictators and petty thugs like President Ahmadinejad of Iran to attack Sharon, but no American who claims to be a leader should stoop so low," he added. "Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised to hear such venom from someone who claimed Hurricane Katrina was punishment for the people of New Orleans."

"Ariel Sharon is a courageous and good man, and he deserves the world's prayers, just as the people of Israel today deserve an apology from Pat Robertson," Kerry concluded.

17. I was, however, disturbed by this kerry quote
"Ariel Sharon is a courageous and good man" by what standard???
Obviously, Kerry knows nothing, or cares nothing, (and kerry is smart, i think it is the latter)about the Palestinian people.

Obviously Robertson is to be condemned for his comments, because he is a sick and twisted man, totally perverse.

Still, Kerry's praise of Sharon's supposed good character is an affront to those who have long been victims of Sharon's criminal policies, which continue today.

21. Perhaps, Ariel Sharon IS a good man...
NOW(namely in that he can't wage his form of politic anymore), but not too many years back he sponsored a series of brutal reprisals and a veritable massacre in the Palestinian refugee camps of Chatila and Sabra. His record hardly indicates him worthy of the compliment "good", and courage is easy when you have the IDF to back you up...I hope the people of the Middle East grab the chance to change the political dynamic of the region now that Arafat and Sharon are gone. I urge the Israeli voter reject Benjamin Netanyahu and establish a dialogue of peace with Palestinian moderates, etc.

25. this isn't really taking sides, IMO
You can be an ally of both Palestinians and Israelis--and hope for the day they have peace between them.

Kerry's good words about Sharon are based on knowing him personally, and also were a way of reaching out to Israel. Kerry has stepped into the leadership vacuum: this is what our president should be doing (but HE hasn't the class)--to reach out and offer support to an allied nation during their time of trouble and grief.

27. I do agree it is not about choosing one people to side with.
Sharon has 50+ years of war crimes to answer for.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qibya_massacre.

kerry supports all of Israel's policies, and never does anything about the plight of the occupied, the victims of US/Israeli policies.

What has Kerry ever done for the Palestinian people? Has he spoken about the illegal wall set up to destroy Palestinian communities?

I do agree it is not about choosing one people to side with... it is however, about choosing justice, which will be a real victory for everyone.

56. It's complicated because of what he has done recently
First, Sharon is either dying or will be so fragile he is out of government - either way this is not the time for a critique of his life.

Israel itself condemned his actions in Lebanon. He also was the most reponsible person for the settlements - which have made a peace settlement impossible. In his recent actions, he did give back the Gaza - which would have been very hard for anyone but him and he likely does want peace, but he wants security for Israel.

Kerry met both with the Palestinian and with Sharon. Kerry's praise is likely for the brave step Sharon took and because it would make no sense for him not to credit the good things (and ignore the bad) when the man is near death or at least very ill. (Remember Kerry even met with Nixon, who hurt Kerry personally - near the end of his life - and was polite. He is the son of a diplomat and has very good manners - unlike Pat Robertson.)

Sharon's has had his problems and has been a douche. But he was courageous in that he split from Likud, formed his own party, and withdrew from Gaza. I was just starting to have hope for him that he was starting to like the role of a peacemaker. And I'm certain that Kerry cares about the sufferings of Palestinians.

Our pussified media have treated that reptile, Robertson, with kid gloves. He's always spoken to with deference by any reporter who interviews him, even when he is spewing the most outrageous, vile invectives one could imagine (which is about 99.9% of the time). How refreshing to hear that someone has been willing to call an anus an asshole rather than trying to pretty it up and call it something perfumed and lovely. Hooray for JFK

As someone pointed out today in the Israel/Palestine Forum, Pat Robertson has succeeded in uniting the different factions in that forum. We all agree that Pat is a moron!

Another DUer posted yesterday that it was remarkable that Iran's President Ahmadinejad and 700 Club's Pat Robertson are on the same side of the issue regarding Sharon. What a pair of religious zealots those two are!

Statement of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton Condemning the Remarks... Regarding Ariel Sharon

Once again... has brought shame... with his recent comments expressing his hope that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will not survive. These come on the heels of various outrageous statements about Israel in the past few months. With each new despicable comment... further lessens his standing as a credible... leader...

http://clinton.senate.gov/news/statements/details.cfm?id=250290&&

http://clinton.senate.gov/

Too bad that the statement above refers to Holocaust denier, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. As to Pat Robertson's own conduct, the crickets are chirping in Hillary's Senate office.

I am not trying to defend Sharon, I never liked him, and was quite horrified when he became prime minister. At this point in time though, his passing from the Israeli political scene is almost surely a bad thing. Politicians are not angels, and especially in the extremely difficult and confused situation over there, they SHOULD NOT be.
