Suicide bombers kill 7 at Iraqi ministry
Edited on Mon Jan-09-06 05:34 AM by maddezmom
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Two suicide bombers blew themselves up outside Iraq's Interior Ministry in Baghdad on Monday, killing at least seven people and wounding 35, police and ministry sources said.

A ceremony celebrating the 84th anniversary of the formation of the Iraqi police force was taking place at the police academy next door to the ministry at the time of the blast.

An Iraqi state television correspondent who attended the ceremony said one mortar bomb had hit the parade ground while a suicide bomber had blown himself up at a checkpoint outside the Interior Ministry.

The ministry has been attacked by insurgents on several previous occasions. It has become a symbol of hatred for Sunni Arab insurgents who accuse it of running Shi'ite militia that target the minority Sunni Arab community. The ministry denies such charges.

earlier Liberators Of Iraq, the British. They also expected people would be throwing flowers at them.

Do a Google on that little adventure for something that sounds like a prediction of the future.

This is strictly a personal, general observation, but I'm in Egypt right now and spent most of 2005 over here. Many local folks still don't like the British very much, especially the ones who have studied their country's history.

I was talking to a Brit recently who found it ironic that he gets a day off in honor of Sophia Zaghloul's birthday. During the 1952 Egyptian Revolution, she killed several British Army officers. Alexandria has a street named for her.

Alexandria also has a historical event that sounds like something straight from Rumsfeld or Scotty McClellan.

In 1882, during a fairly minor riot at a time of surging Egyptian nationalism, a British fleet parked in Alexandria's harbor and proceeded to unleash Shock-n-Awe by bombarding the place.

Even though shells were dropping into Mohammed Ali Plaza, one of the biggest civilian gathering places in the city, Admiral Seymour informed London that he had directed the shelling against the insurgents only. And "with pin-point accuracy".

Yeah. So pin-pointedly accurate that one of the buildings he destroyed was the British Consulate in Alexandria.

We just never learn...

Attack on Iraq Interior Ministry Kills 21

By JASON STRAZIUSO, Associated Press Writer 30 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Insurgents exploded a suicide car bomb and launched two mortar shells at
Iraq's Interior Ministry during National Police Day celebrations Monday, killing 21 people and injuring 24, police said.

An Internet statement by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in the name of his al-Qaida in Iraq terrorist group rebuked Sunni Arabs for taking part in last month's parliamentary elections, saying they had "thrown a rope" to save U.S. policy.

Meanwhile, the U.S. military said eight U.S. troops and four American civilians died aboard a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter that crashed late Saturday in northern Iraq. The military initially said only that there were eight passengers and four crew aboard.

With the latest military deaths, at least 2,207 U.S. service members have died since the war started in 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

The military said it wasn't yet known what caused the crash and an investigation would take some time. The helicopter went down about seven miles east of Tal Afar, a northern city near the Syrian border that has seen heavy fighting with insurgents.

The Black Hawk was part of a two-helicopter team providing support for the 101st Airborne Division and was flying between bases when communications were lost, the military said.

It was the deadliest helicopter crash in Iraq since a CH-53 Sea Stallion went down in bad weather in western Iraq on Jan. 26, 2005, killing 31 U.S. service members.

7. It's 28 dead now. And get this quote >>>>
One was wearing the uniform of an Iraqi police major while the other was dressed as a lieutenant-colonel. Both had high-level security passes which enabled them to get through the main checkpoint to the compound, and would have allowed them to get into the ministry itself.

"We're dying to know how they got hold of these badges to enter the building," one police source told Reuters. "This is a disaster. We can't understand how they managed to get inside without being searched."

DUH!

They've infiltrated the Iraqi government and the security forces! They've been in there for well over a year! Hersh spoke of this last March on a speaking tour (I was able to see him...amazing speech).

A key passage:

The Pentagon began inventing facts to cover for the attacks and the massive roundup of “insurgents” that made their way to prisons, such as Abu Ghraib. Hersh pointed out that the U.S. was incapable of obtaining decent intelligence on the Iraqi resistance but is apparently very adept at picking up on “sensitive communications” between bin Laden and Zarqawi that happen to make it to FOX News broadcasts.

The Iraqi resistance has the government wired. They have people in various key areas of the government. Hersh made a point of emphasizing that. In the meantime, American intelligence about the resistance remains at about the same level as it did eighteen months ago, scattered and incomplete. This lack of intelligence is what led to wholesale roundups of suspected members of the resistance (for a prime example of how house-to-house searches were conducted, see the Extra Features on the Fahrenheit 9/11 DVD. Specifically, the interview with the Swedish journalist who went along with American troops on house-to-house searches in Samarra.) Most of the detainees were kept in Abu Ghraib. Abu Ghraib has a notorious reputation amongst Iraqis. It is the site of the most heinous acts against prisoners by Saddam Hussein and his supporters during his reign. The Americans at Abu Ghraib, however, took things even further. Aside from the heinous actions involving beatings, using dogs trained to bite the groin areas, and even outright murder, one aspect that has raised the ire amongst Iraqis, Muslims, and others around the world, is the sexual abuse levied against the prisoners. Hersh prefaced this segment of his speech by stating that those involved in the actual application of abuse and torture in Abu Ghraib were not just acting out of ignorance or out of being victims of circumstance (understaffing an over-crowded prison.) On the contrary, the specific actions taken had to only be at the behest of people in charge of the intelligence gathering in Iraq. This goes all the way to the White House.

6. How many deaths will it take

till we know that too many people have died?

to paraphrase Bob Dylan. The Masters of War have really been working overtime on this disaster.

10. Attack at Heavily Secured Iraqi Ministry Kills at Least 14
BAGHDAD, Iraq, Jan. 9 - The latest in a series of brazen attacks in the heart of Baghdad's heavily fortified government zone continued today as two suicide bombers disguised as high-ranking police officers blew themselves up outside the Interior Ministry, killing at least 14 officers and wounding 25.

The attack came during a parade to mark Police Day that was attended by the Iraqi ministers of the interior and defense and by the American ambassador, an official of the Interior Ministry said.

Last week, a similar ceremony on a parade ground in the government zone to mark the country's Army Day was disrupted by mortar fire. No one was injured in the attack on that ceremony, which was also attended by the American ambassador, Zalmay Khalizad.

One of the bombers who carried out today's attack was disguised as a police major and the other as a lieutenant colonel, according to an official at the Interior Ministry. They both were wearing explosive belts under their uniforms.
