"Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has started breathing independently after doctors reduced the inflow of anesthetic drugs in an attempt to waken the PM from deep sedation, Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital director Professor Shlomo Mor Yosef said Monday.

Speaking to reporters, Mor Yosef added that while Sharon was able to breathe on his own, he is still connected to a respirator.

"We started the awakening process this morning by reducing the anesthetic drugs given to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. It is a gradual process," he said.

"The moment we reduced the medication during the first stage, the prime minister started breathing independently. Even though he is still connected to a respirator, he is able to breathe on his own," he added. "The process may take hours or several days. The prime minister is still in serious condition."

Doctors start rousing Sharon

ISRAELI Prime Minister Ariel Sharon began breathing without help last night after doctors started to rouse him from a medically induced coma.

"I want to point out that the moment we began reducing the dosage, the Prime Minister began breathing independently," said Prof Shlomo Mor-Yosef, director of Jerusalem's Hadassad hospital.

"He is still connected to respirators that help him but the Prime Minister is breathing spontaneously. This is one stage, a first stage."

Mr Sharon's condition was critical. He will be brought out of the medically induced coma gradually, but the process could take hours or days.

Sharon treated for heart trouble on Wednesday
ReutersReuters

Jan 12, 2006 — JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Cardiologists were called to treat Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon for heart trouble on Wednesday as he was taken off sedatives at a Jerusalem hospital, Israel's Maariv newspaper reported on Thursday.

The cardiologists stabilised Sharon's condition but found that he suffered from a heart murmur that may allow blood clots to filter to the brain where they may cause additional strokes, the Maariv daily said, citing medical sources.

Hadassah hospital spokesman Ron Kromer said Sharon's heart rate was normal when asked about the report on Thursday, though he did not comment directly on the newspaper account.

"The prime minister's condition continues to be critical but stable," he said. "He will undergo a (brain) scan later in the day."
