Blair sets out his view of the new world order to Congress
Blair sets out his view of the new world order to Congress

TONY Blair last night became the first British prime minister to address a joint meeting of the US Congress since Margaret Thatcher in 1985. The following are extracts from his speech:

"Mr Speaker and Mr Vice- President, honorable members of Congress. Let me begin by thanking you most sincerely for voting to award me the Congressional Gold Medal. Let me also express my gratitude to President Bush. Through the troubled times since September 11 changed our world, we have been allies and friends.

September 11

"Members of Congress, I feel a most urgent sense of mission about today's world. September 11 was not an isolated event, but a tragic prologue, Iraq another act, and many further struggles will be set upon this stage before it's over.

Terrorism

"A new and deadly virus has emerged. The virus is terrorism whose intent to inflict destruction is unconstrained by human feeling and whose capacity to inflict it is enlarged by technology. This is a battle that can't be fought or won only by armies. Our ultimate weapon is not our guns, but our beliefs.

3. It is now quite clear
That no matter how repulsive the US Policy, Blair will support it. If Bush were to nuke Wales Blair would happily egg him on. Blair and his supporters do not give two shits about the people he is supposed to serve and has forgotten that Britain does not have permanent allies, only permanent interests.

7. To quote Bush, I respectfully disagree.
Blair and his supporters do not give two shits about the people he is supposed to serve and has forgotten that Britain does not have permanent allies, only permanent interests.

That formula worked during the time of Palmerston, ie, the empire, but it simply doesn't any longer. Britain is now a second-rate power, and as such, will have to choose sides. Major powers can play at realpolitik, because they can survive its failures; minor powers cannot. England lost the ability to focus on its 'permanent interests' when it lost control of the seas; it now must, for better or worse, choose a side to be a junior partner with, or go the way of Switzerland and irrelevancy. The senior partner can either be the U.S. or the E.U., but England is unlikely to ever again be the deciding weight in a balance of power struggle -- she is simply not large or powerful enough to accomplish that, and the major powers are going to demand military and economic integration as the price of entry to the game. That integration will prevent the flip flopping from side to side that was so common in the 19th century (when Palmerston coined the phrase) and into the 20th. It's becoming a black and white world.

6. Seriously. can anyone offer a reasonable analysis
of how and why Blair decided to trip down the fascist, neoconservative yellow(cake) road with Bush. Does he really believe in America's holy mission to save the world and/or civilization -- I know there are British neo-imperialists -- is he one of them? How from a labor perspective does he defend his new views. Does he really believe in all this terrorism boogeyman stuff he spouts?

Is he just pragmatic -- he realizes he'd better hitch the UK to America's wagon in order to vicariously feel powerful again and share the spoils of war?
