Probe Set In NSA Bugging

By Dan Eggen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, January 11, 2006; A04

The National Security Agency's inspector general has opened an investigation into eavesdropping without warrants in the United States by the agency authorized by President Bush after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, according to a letter released late yesterday.

The Pentagon's acting inspector general, Thomas F. Gimble, wrote that his counterpart at the NSA "is already actively reviewing aspects of that program" and has "considerable expertise in the oversight of electronic surveillance," according to the letter sent to House Democrats who have requested official investigations of the NSA program.

Gimble's letter appears to confirm that an internal investigation into the NSA's domestic eavesdropping program, authorized by Bush in a secret order revealed in recent weeks, is underway. The Justice Department has opened a separate criminal investigation into the leak of the highly classified program's existence.

...

Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) said NSA's inspector general should not be conducting an investigation if the office has played a role in approving the program.

2. What are the statistics showing genuine successes when an entity
INVESTIGATES ITSELF?

Is this the crowning blow or does this rank behind death and dismemberments, ruined families, loss of mental stability, loss of immune systensm setbacks and loss of careers?

Can you believe this?

And why is a DOD person reporting on the NSA?

We lost out country and we may not regain it if enough people can't get interested in what is happening to them.

We are screwed by diabolical imbeciles.

These are supposed to be the big time corporatists who want to run the government like a business. Well, they are not running it like normal middle class businesspeople - normal middle class businesspeople have checks and balances and auditors.

ssit!! That's what this is. They are dragging us deeper into their excrement. Blood pressure rising.

"NSA's inspector general should not be conducting an investigation if the office has played a role in approving the program."

Well no shit.

How many easy anaolgies could we come up with to make for easy consumption by the simple right?

Since when do criminals get to investigate/judge their own crimes?

6. Ya know, the Pentagon IG resigned SUDDENLY with little notice
some time ago. I wondered what was up at the time, but didn't have anyone who was a pal in the right place who was in a position to actually know.

Disgust, maybe? Horror??

Gotta wonder....

7. Yep. I saw the ubiquitous Jon Kyl on the local news last night...
He said smugly "while I'm SURE the President acted within his legal authority by authorizing the wiretaps, there will be an investigation to make sure there was proper oversight".
Now, I'm only slightly paraphrasing here, and this statement made me begin to scream obscenities at the teevee.
He's SURE the Pretzeldent was acting legally by totally ignoring the Constitution, the abomination known as the Patriot Act, and FISA... all on the basis of a legal opinion issuing from the BRILLIANT legal mind of Al Gonzales; but just to REASSURE us, they'll investigate.
Painful...truly painful.
