Poll: Bush approval at 38 percent (Pew Research)

Poll: Bush approval at 38 percent

News about domestic wiretaps and congressional bribes did not change public opinion about the president and Congress during the past month, a new poll found.

The poll, conducted Jan. 4-8 by the Pew Research Center for the Public & the Press, found U.S. President George W. Bush's job approval rating at 38 percent -- the same as it was in December. Job approval for Republican congressional leaders was 33 percent, and for Democratic congressional leaders it was 34 percent.

Democrats did somewhat better when the Pew poll asked voters which party can do a better job of handling Iraq -- which respondents identified as the nation's top problem. Forty-one percent said Democrats could handle Iraq better, while 27 percent said Republicans would do better.

Democrats scored better than Republicans on every specific issue mentioned except one -- security and terrorism.

2. This is good for the Democrats. Though, I still can't get...
why people see Bush as "strong on the war against terrorism". :wtf:? Bush has ignored the problem of terrorism. He's completely taken up with Iraq and Tax Cuts and the "Christian Right".

13. Dems will always have an uphill battle on terrorism and taxes
in the minds of much of America. I don't totally blame MSM either. Maybe it is the fact that republicans like to blow most of our tax dollars on weapons and war. It is one of the reasons I like Clark for president. I am sure repubs would try to swiftboat him, but I dont think it would work.

I can't tell you how many people I know who make $30 grand a year and vote for republicans because of "taxes." Whe Kerry says "I will raise taxes on the top 1%" he doesn't realize that 80% of America thinks they are in the top 1%. In 08, I hope the dem contender something more tangible like "I will raise taxes only on people who make over $250,000 a year."

And most Americans don't understand the deficit enough to think that it will ever effect them.

17. Or ...How about promising NOT TO RAISE YOUR TAXES
unless you make over $250,000 a year. Emphasis on NOT raising taxes rather than I WILL RAISE Taxes on those who.........

The surge is that he has stopped the bleeding, and his numbers have stabilized.

That's his surge.

7. "Somewhat better"? WTF? 41% vs. 27% is "somewhat better"?
This is the same "liberal media" that calls 51% a mandate.

14. yeah, a slanted story to be sure
i've seen stories about polls on cnn's website that use a headline highlighting the ONE question out of twenty that the republicans scored better than the democrats in.

10. Heating Bills...
December's heating bills are just arriving. I've heard some are TWICE what they were a year ago. Can't wait to open mine. What will this do to those ratings?

11. I know that pain.
Heating this winter is a big cost. Lucky for many of us the weather has been mild. I guess we can thank global warming for that. :sarcasm:

And btw, welcome to D.U. hope you enjoy. :hi:

12. Why do they even ask people about the "congressional leaders?"
I think half of the country doesn't even know who the vice president is, let alone senators and congressmen.

22. I wish someone would do a poll
on exactly, specifically WHY do Americans think Republicans are better on security and terrorism when they seem to agree with the Dems on everything else! The Iraq War is NOT making us safer, it's made us LESS safe. How then can Republicans be better at security? It doesn't make sense and I really wish I could hear specifics from these misled individuals who believe Republicans keep us safer.

The rest of that poll.....Yayyyy!!! Now if we can get the voting process ironed out.....
