HELENA - Without ever mentioning the Republican Party by name, Democratic Gov. Brian Schweitzer on Thursday blasted its spending cap plan, condemned its past lack support for education and brushed aside a GOP regent's move to chop college tuition and boost K-12 funding.
Schweitzer's actions came at morning meeting of the state Board of Education that he heads. This board comprises the separate boards of regents and public education.
The governor touted his administration's spending increases for K-12 and higher education last year. Without being specific, Schweitzer told the board that his commitment to higher education and K-12 school funding would continue.

Schweitzer's budget director, David Ewer, traced University System and K-12 funding, complete with graphs showing trends over the past 15 years. They depicted drops in K-12 and University System funding, per student, during most of the 1990s - under Republican governors and with Republicans controlling the both legislative houses.
